Nara Period

History
It was the year AD 710-784 in where period in which the imperial government was at Nara,
and Sinicization and Buddhism were most highly developed

Chinese language and literature were studied intensively; the Chinese characters were adapted
to the Japanese language; and numerous Chinese manuscripts, particularly Buddhist
scriptures, were copied.

They were known as the Kojiki and Nihon shoki


The architecture in the Nara period.
1.borrowed many elements from the Tang Dynasty in China, which was deeply focused on

Buddhism. As a result, most important monuments from this time are Buddhist temples.

Most buildings of this period were made out of wood, usually painted in red, black and golden colors. The roofs

were commonly covered with blue-tinted tiles and the ends of the roof that project from the walls, known as

eaves, were usually elevated on the corners.


Food/Culinary of the Nara period
Somen noodles is very often eaten in Nara period hand-stretched noodles are
long and thin and have a smooth texture with a velvety mouthfeel

Chagayu is a traditional breakfast food The dish was originally enjoyed by monks
at Nara’s Todai-ji temple as part of the Omizutori festival, but eventually became a
common food enjoyed by locals throughout the region
Clothing of the Nara Period

It would usually have 2 layers of clothing

Its upper part is heavy jacket with really long sleeves

The bottom part was to have a adjustable belt


Religion
In the Nara Period, the main religion was Buddhism. In the Nara Period, the power
and the influence of Buddhism is extended. This act was done by Emperor Shomu.

Many new temples were also built because of the influence of China culture and a
monk from China called Ganjin, he was a major figure in China he went Japan to
spread about buddhist religion and the Nara Period people is mostly buddhist
because of the influence of Ganjin.
