12:10 Art Gallery of Western Australia
Visit Duration: 2 hours, 30 mins
3.7 KM, 0 minutes by transit from Kings Park & Botanic Garden

The Western Australia Art Collection is housed in this art museum at the Perth Cultural Center. The main
gallery building was built in 1977 and features elements of Bauhaus architecture with a Brutalist exterior. At
the time of construction the architectural design was considered innovative. The Western Australian collection
has been accumulating since 1895 and the collection has evolved into an invaluable resource and inspiration
for locals and visitors. The collection offers insight into the evolution of art in Western Australia, the Australia
and the world. Among the most important groups of art in the collection there is the region’s indigenous and
non-indigenous work. Other highlights are the Australian and British paintings and sculptures from the 20 th
century. Through the collection visitors should be able to trace the history of the region and understand its
context in the world. Because of Perth’s location the collection includes an emphasis on the Indian Ocean
Rim. Perth’s geographical location means it has access to many exciting cultures which are reflected in the Image By: Orderinchaos

14:55 St Mary's Cathedral
Visit Duration: 1 hour
1.0 KM, 0 minutes walking from Art Gallery of Western Australia

This cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Perth and the Archbishop. It is located on the
peak of a hill in Eastern Perth at the heart of Victoria Square. The structure we see today was built in three
phases; the first phase was completed in 1865. In the 1920s the second phase commenced with plans to
rebuild the cathedral and replace it with a Gothic-style church. However the construction came to a halt during
the Great Depression leaving an incomplete structure with a new transept and sanctuary but the original
church nave. 70 years later the incomplete cathedral needed extensive repairs and in the late 1990s and
2000s plans were made for repairing and reconstructing the cathedral in phase three. New designs were
drawn up expanding the cathedral and adding a second spire and underground parish center. The work was
completed in 2009 and the cathedral was reopened.

Today the church can accommodate 1,600 worshipers and the design has won several awards. It features
high vaulted ceilings, intricate stained glass windows, an outdoor water feature and a new, modern section.
There has been no attempt to mimic the original structure and you can clearly see where the old and the new Address: 17 Victoria Square, Perth, WA, 6000,

Visit Duration: 1 hour
0.8 KM, 0 minutes walking from Fremantle Markets

The Round House (which actually has 12 sides) is the oldest surviving public building in the state; it was first
opened in 1831, eighteen months after the British Swan River Colony settlement was established in 1829.
The structure was purpose-built to detain convicted criminals and it was used for this purpose until 1886.
When it was no longer a gaol the Round House became police holding cells until the late 1890s. After that it
was accommodated the Water Police and then was used for storage. In 1900 the Round House was home to
a chief constable and his family of 10 children. One of the Round House’s best known inmates was John
Gavin, a 15 year old European who admitted to the murder of George Pollard and was held in the Round
House until being hung in 1844. He was the first person to be executed in Western Australia.

Take a day trip to this island paradise. Rottnest is a low lying island covering 19km² about 18km off shore
from Fremantle. It is a protected area due to its pristine eco-system, bird life, flora and fauna. Several species
of birds nest by the shallow salt lakes of the island. The island has three endemic tree species including the

other indigenous animals. About 100 people live on the island permanently and thousands visit the island
each year by ferry.

The island had been inhabited by humans for thousands of years before the Europeans reached Australia.
The island got its name from Willem de Vlamingh who arrived here in 1696 and seeing the quokka thought he
was looking at rats – hence rat’s nest or Rottnest. Since then the island has been used as a prison, military
