Fluid Exam 2016
Fluid Exam 2016
The 6-cm-diameter 20°C water jet in the following figure strikes a plate containing a hole of 4-cm
diameter. Part of the jet passes through the hole, and part is deflected. Determine the horizontal
force required to hold the plate.
The system in the following figure consists of 1200 m of 5 cm cast iron pipe, two 45° and four 90°
flanged long-radius elbows, a fully open flanged globe valve, and a sharp exit into a reservoir. If the
elevation at point 1 is 400 m, what gage pressure is required at point 1 to deliver 0.005 m3/s of
water at 20°C into the reservoir?
Use the following coefficients to calculate head loss in fittings and valves
45° Long radius Elbow K=0.2
90° Long radius Elbow K=0.3
Open Flanged globe valve K=8.5
Submerged exit K=1
A) The discharge in a trapezoidal channel is 10 m3/s. The bottom width of the channel is 3.0 m, and
the side slopes are 1 vertical to 1 horizontal. If the depth of flow is 1.0 m, is the flow supercritical or
subcritical? (5)
Froude number:
B) The spillway shown has a discharge of 2.5 m3/s per meter of width occurring over it. What
depth y2 will exist downstream of the hydraulic jump? Assume negligible energy loss over the
spillway. (8)
