Once you have connected all the equipment as shown on this example please proceed to the next step to check if the Stom-

In order to use StompIO either live or in the studio you will need a Mac or PC com-
puter (check Installation and Authorization manual for system requirements).
You need to install on this computer all software included with StompIO to get the
best possible experience.
There are two main software components you need to install first to properly oper-
ate StompIO:
There is no need to install any StompIO System Drivers on Mac because StompIO
will use Apple OS X USB Audio System Drivers.

There is no need to install any audio drivers on a Mac to use StompIO as a USB

doing this simple test:
• Connect the included power supply unit to a mains outlet, then connect the DC

StompIO
StompIO is a USB Audio Interface and Controller especially designed to control IK Multimedia “Powered By AmpliTube”
software modeling processors.
StompIO is designed to work in combination with a core software application called “AmpliTube X-GEAR” that runs on the
host computer.
• Go onstage without amplifiers & stomps pedals, only your computer and StompIO, and still have access to 100s of ex-
tremely accurate digital models of sought-after gear pieces, with a convenient small footprint, all in one device. Bring
the same sounds onstage that you use in your productions, create custom controls for each Patch and lots more. All this
without having to look at the computer screen at all.
• Go in the studio and remotely control all your favorite “Powered by Amplitube” processors within the AmpliTube X-GEAR
“shell”. You will be able to use StompIO as a remote controller for AmpliTube X-GEAR hosted by your favorite Digital Audio
Workstation or, at the same time, use it as an extremely high quality ASIO or CoreAudio interface for your favorite DAW.
Even if you don’t intend to use StompIO as an audio interface (because, for example, you’re using Pro Tools®) you can still
Mac/PC
StompIO
Patches are divided into 1,000 Banks (numbered from 000 to 999) containing 4
programs each (A, B, C, D).
The PATCH NUMBER display (see 2.1 - StompIO front panel) shows the Bank num-
ber and the Program, for example 000A or 512C.
The AmpliTube X-GEAR Presets work pretty much the same as you’d expect from
plug-in Presets with one important addition: they can be copied to StompIO Patch-
es.
This means that from either the on-screen AmpliTube X-GEAR interface or directly
from the StompIO panel, it is possible to browse among all AmpliTube X-GEAR
presets and to COPY them to any of the StompIO 4,000 patches.
From this moment on, that Preset has been copied to a StompIO Patch and can be
modified and saved independently from the original Preset it was created from.
To do so, simply insert each product’s CD into your computer’s CD-ROM drive and
double click on all appropriate installers. This will add these models to the Ampli-
Tube X-GEAR shell, allowing you to play with many other amps, stomps, cabinets
and effects, and to cover one of the widest possible guitar and bass tonal spec-
trums on the market.
For further reference, please refer to each “Powered by AmpliTube” product’s In-
stallation and Authorization manual.
If the StompIO drivers are already installed and the StompIO is connected and
turned ON, your AmpliTube X-GEAR audio configuration will already be set for
StompIO, without the need to set up anything on the Audio Setup window in Am-
pliTube X-GEAR.
The AmpliTube X-GEAR default audio settings are optimized for low latency and
good performance. The default audio settings for the StompIO audio interface
are:
On most computers, these settings will deliver the optimal compromise between
low latency and great reliability.
However, if you would like to change these settings in AmpliTube X-GEAR stand-
alone, select Settings > Audio MIDI setup.
If you experience audio pops or clicks while playing, try increasing the buffer-size
value to the next higher step.
If your computer is very powerful and the 144 or 128 value is working perfectly,
you may even try setting this value to 96 (Windows only) or 64 (Mac only) for an
even faster response. However, this is not advisable on most computers and should
not be used as a standard setting for live shows unless you extensively test for reli-
ability beforehand.

control to balance the level of dual Cabs rigs between one Cab and the other.
• Knob 5: Mix. This is normally at zero as it mixes the signal captured by the Cab
model microphone with the direct signal taken from the Stomps output. This is
mainly useful with bass amps to mix the direct signal with the cabinet one, but
can be interesting on certain kind of guitar sounds as well. This control has to be
used in conjunction with Phase.
• Knob 6: Phase. This is normally set at zero (center) as this value can go positive
or negative. By adjusting this parameter to positive values you are delaying the
Cabinet signal by the amount that is displayed in milliseconds.
By adjusting this parameter to negative values you are delaying the direct signal
by the amount that is displayed in milliseconds.
Use this control with dual Cabinets setups to, for example, create stereo sounds
by delaying one cabinet (so use positive values) by a few milliseconds in respect
of the other one.
You can use this control to experiment with delay between the Direct and Cabi-
net sounds on bass sounds.

• Sending a specified MIDI CC# when one StompIO external controller is moved
(only when in PLAY Mode).
• Receiving a signal to “move” the external controller when a specified MIDI CC#
is received by StompIO.
To change MIDI Channels for transmitting and receiving data, follow these steps:

With StompIO you can play on-stage without heavy amps and cabinets, feeding your processed stereo signal directly to the
PA system.
When you play live and need to send the StompIO output signals to the PA mixers always use the StompIO balanced outputs.
These outputs are high level and are capable of driving long cables without adding any noise (if the inputs on the other side
are balanced).
Also use these connections when you are sending your signals to the monitors mixer, if you are hearing yourself with
wedges or with in-ear monitors. The PA engineers will then split the signals to be sent to the front of house mixer.
You don’t need any D.I. boxes because the StompIO balanced outputs are designed to be connected directly to your mixer or
PA system.

With StompIO you can play live without amps and cabinets, but if you prefer using real guitar cabinets you can do that easily
as well by using a mono (or stereo if you have two cabinets) power amp.
We recommend using a tube-based power amplifier designed specifically for guitar or bass as this will preserve the tube
modeled tone of AmpliTube X-GEAR better than solid-state power amplifiers. However, solid-state amps will work without
problems and may be used as well.
Check the input of your Power Amp and use StompIO Unbalanced or Balanced outputs depending on the power amp input type.

Remember that AmpliTube X-GEAR presets and StompIO Patches always includes a section that emulates the sound of vari-
ous guitar Cabinet models.
This is intended to be recorded as is, or to be sent to the PA and full-range monitoring system without any processing, but
in this case you are sending it to a real guitar cabinet (or more). For this reason, to get the best possible sound it is VERY
important that all guitar cabinets emulation inside all AmpliTube X-GEAR Presets are TURNED OFF.
To do that easily without having to modify all your patches, follow these simple steps:
• From PLAY press ENTER. The main menu screen will appear:
• Press NEXT button to select “GLOBAL SETUP”, then press ENTER. This screen will appear.:

If Cabinet Emulation is OFF all the settings relative to the Cabinets and microphones emulation included in the Preset or

However the Patches will not be modified by this setting which is only temporarily disabling the cabinets emulation.
StompIO can be used in the studio to control all AmpliTube X-GEAR plug-in instances used on the Digital Audio Workstation
session you are working on.
You can also use StompIO as an Audio Interface for your Digital Audio Workstation if it supports the ASIO standard (Win-
dows XP and Vista) or the CoreAudio standard (Mac OS X).
Just go to the Audio Settings window on your DAW and select the ASIO or CoreAudio StompIO drivers. From this moment on
the Main output for your DAW will be sent to the StompIO Bal/Unbal and Headphones outputs, and the StompIO instrument
input will be available on your DAW for recording.

This connection allows you to use the StompIO Class A preamp while using another audio interface for your work while you
are controlling the AmpliTube X-GEAR plug-in with StompIO.
As explained in the “MIDI” paragraph, you can use StompIO to control external effects processors via MIDI, or you can have
other external MIDI devices control StompIO.
To have StompIO controlling one or more external effects unit connect StompIO MIDI OUT to the external effects MIDI IN.
