Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Using this type of Basic Productivity Tools allows students who may have learning disabilities to work at their
own pace as well as being hands on with a computer. This allows students that may not be able to write, to
type on the computer when creating their timeline. Students who struggle with ADHD or ADD are able to
focus on the task given and remain engaged during the learning process. This also works for students with
hearing disabilities to be able to learn and teach the information because most of the lesson is focused on
reading rather than hearing.

Lesson idea implementation:

Teachers will begin introducing the material being taught by asking students about different life cycles. What
do they know about a butterfly? How does the life cycle of a butterfly compare to other life cycles? After
discussing the material and coming up with ideas, students will be sent to do research on their own. They will
have many books and materials to help them explore the different stages. Students will be given a graphic
organizer during this time to write down different facts. After the research stage is over, students will then
create a timeline of “their pet butterfly.” This allows students to not only learn about the life cycle, create a
timeline, but also personalize a story about their butterfly that can later be used for Language Arts standards.
Students will be required to place pictures, correct times, and a minimum of three facts per stage. Students
will be required to show creativity during this time including different fonts, colors, and set ups of time lines.

After students have created their timelines, the teacher will be able to easily assess them by checking their
facts on the timeline to show if they have mastered the standard or not. This lesson will be mostly completed
in class to give all students fair amount of time to complete the project. To conclude the lesson, students will
present their timelines to the class.
Reflective Practice:
This activity could positively impact student learning by giving students information about the life cycle of a
butterfly in many different mediums including: discussion, books, creating the timeline, and presenting the
timeline to the class, as well as receiving the information while other classmates are presenting. In order to

further enhance this project, students could be required to pick another animal to research and design
another timeline of the life cycle and then compare it to their butterfly life cycle.
