Internship  Program  Executive  Summary

The  Students  with  Diabetes  Internship  Program™  is  a  competitive  program
designed  to  develop  and  train  undergraduate  and  graduate  students  living  with  type
1  diabetes  to  become  leaders  in  the  diabetes  community.

The  goal  of  the  Students  with  Diabetes  Internship  Program™  is  to  introduce  young
adults  living  with  T1D  to  the  various  professional  opportunities  within  the  diabetes
industry  and  community  while  equipping  them  with  the  necessary  skills  and
experience  to  create,  train  and  inspire  the  next  generation  of  leaders  in  diabetes.

The  Students  with  Diabetes  Internship  Program™  will  be  publically  announced  in
October  2012.    Participating  companies,  governmental  entities  and  intern
applications  will  be  available  on  www.studentswithdiabetes.com.    Upon
announcement,  Students  with  Diabetes  will  implement  a  multi-‐faceted  public
relations  campaign  to  promote  the  program,  internship  sites,  internship  awards  and
intern  experiences  in  multiple  media  outlets,  including  press  releases,  diabetes
publications,  diabetes  community  websites,  Facebook,  Twitter,  YouTube  and  in
collaboration  with  various  diabetes  bloggers.

Intern  applications  are  due  February  1,  2013,  and  Students  with  Diabetes  will  work
with  diabetes  companies  and  governmental  entities  to  match  their  needs  with
qualified  internship  applicants.    Internships  will  be  awarded  and  announced  on
March  15,  2013.

Students  and  young  adults  awarded  an  internship  are  required  to  attend  the  SWD
Leadership  Training  Academy  and  the  2013  Students  with  Diabetes  National
Conference.    The  SWD  Leadership  Academy  is  designed  to  train  the  students  and
young  adults  in  leadership  skills,  general  business  skills,  grassroots  organization
skills  and  advocacy  skills  to  enhance  their  professional  development  and  prepare
them  for  the  internship  experience.

The  internships  are  summer  internships  (6-‐8  weeks)  and  should  commence  June  15
and  continue  through  approximately  August  15,  2013.      Internships  are  paid
positions,  and  therefore  interns  are  responsible  for  their  own  travel  and  living
expenses.

I  have  included  a  Program  Description  document,  an  Internship  Site  Form  and  the
Intern  Application  for  your  review.

If  you  would  like  to  be  involved  as  a  host  site,  please  let  me  know  ASAP.    From  there,
we  will  determine  what  level  of  involvement  your  company  wishes  to  have  in  the
