Raises for firefighters, public

safety personnel urged
BY HORACE HOLLOMAN

For a decade, DeKalb

County resident Faye Coffield
said she has advocated for
higher pay for firefighters and
public safety officials in the
county.
During a recent board
of commissioners meeting,
Coffield said commissioners
requesting to be paid $85,000
a year for a part-time job is
“ridiculous.”
“It is ridiculous that you
have the nerve to fix your
mouth and ask someone to
pay you $85,000 for a job
and you say you can’t live off
$40,000 but yet and still you
pay DeKalb County police
[officers] and DeKalb County
fire [fighters] to live off of it as
their main source of income.
That’s totally disgraceful,”
Coffield said.
Last year, commissioners
signed a letter to state
senators asking for their
pay to increase to at least
50 percent of what Superior
Court judges make. Some
residents say the request does
not consider the county’s
safety issues.
“The citizens of DeKalb
have a lot of faith in their
police department, but
obviously, you guys don’t,”
Coffield said. “You’re
losing police, you’re losing
firefighters and you sit up

that’s because they haven’t
