Pros and Cons On The Media
Pros and Cons On The Media
Overview:
This is a lesson where students will be taught to have a basic understanding of the pros and cons on
instagram. Instagram is a very popular social media platform. Where 76 percent of all 13 years olds have an account.
Which is why we chose to focus on it since our demographic is middle schoolers. Within this lesson we will have
opportunities for students to learn about the pros and cons of social media. This will be within Kahoots and other
tasks so kids can have fun while learning. We also incorporate SMART which is an acronym for being Safe. It
stands for being Safe, Meeting, Accepting, Reliable, and Tell while being safe online. This will be a two day process
where students will have the opportunity to embrace the pros and cons of social media while learning ways to be
safe.
Objective:
Give students a basic understanding of the pros and cons of instagram.
Materials:
Instagram knowledge (We do provide a summary of the app)
Printed out infographic
Directions:
1. If students or teacher are unaware of what instagram is introduce them by reading the bref instagram
summary which was mainly based for teachers since many preteens have the account already.
2. Read the introduction to students so they understand what they are going to be doing for the following
days.
3. Following the introduction introduce the first activity which will need you to print out or pull up with a
projector the infographic we have provided. Once the activity is completed have the students complete the
reflection.
4. Following the reflection have the students research what SMART is. Once they have found it have they find
some example of when SMART has been used and when SMART should have been used to avoid bad
situation. We have attached an example of when SMART should have been used. Once many of them have
found an article, story, etc have them share out to the class. Then have the other students categorize is it
should me a S, M, A, R, or T. Once all the students have shared out have them complete the reflection
provided as a class.
Day 2
5. As a class reflect of the previous day with the question we have provided. Have the students talk in a group
or as a class to answer the questions.
6. Once conversation has died down have read the directions for the fourth activity. Open Kahoot with the
URL provided, wait for students to add the code and begin. Once the kahoot is finished have the students
complete the reflection as a class.
7. Once the reflection for the fourth activity is completed have them reopen kahoot and begin the fifth and
final kahoot. Have them answer the five question and following that have them reflect on everything they
have learned.
8. Have them complete their drawings and if they want they can publish what they have learned onto social
media.
If you or any other student aren’t familiar with the social media app Instagram here is a brief
summary:
Instagram is a social media app where 13 year olds and higher can make an
account share multiple photos that have the ability to be edited online or
upload videos. This app has had updates that give you the ability to create a
story or a live story where you can put a photo or video that would only last
24 hours on there profile. Instagram also has the ability to direct message
(DM) another account and have private messages together.
Instagram is a great way to express yourself if you are a photographer you
can share you work with other, or if you are a makeup artist then this is also
a place to share your beauty, this is a great place to start a career by
promoting a company or yourself.
Some ways people promote themselves in a negative way. By promoting
only there body, by sharing information that could be wrong, by hurting
themselves and others or posting about someone other than themselves.
Introduction
*Teacher to students*
Hello and welcome to learning about the pros and cons within social media. Many of you already
know what instagram is and for those of you who are unaware of instagram will soon become
aware. Within these two days you will be enriched with many questions from Kahoot informing
you on this topic.
*Teacher*
Have the students think to themselves or in groups and come up with a couple of pros and cons
statements that correlate with social media/instagram.
1. Directions: On a sticky note write down a pro or con statement that correlate with social
media/instagram. On the infographic we have attached have them stick the sticky note. *We
have attached some pros and con for examples.*
Reflection
* students write on loose paper to be collected *
After having the group decision what did you find everyone shifted to when they talked
about pros and cons? What did you find had a greater number of stickies pros or cons?
Finally write what you know now about social media/ instagram that you didn’t before
starting this.
Directions
2. This is SMART what it stands for and the definitions if you were unaware of its meanings are
*below*. SMART is an easy acronym to think about when on social media. Have the students go
online and find examples to share with the class on how SMART could have been used to avoid a
situation. Once they have one talk as a class and have some students share an example and have the
other students find what letter it stands for.
Ex.
Travis was online and stumbled on a pdf version of a book that he needed for class. Without checking
online he decided to download it and it gave his computer a virus. He had no clue about the virus and
shared the link with many classmate. The next day his computer wouldn’t allow him and his friends to go
on the internet or see the pdf.
This would be an example of what?
Reliable and Safe; Instead of downloading a sketchy pdf. Go and find a safe way to get a pdf. version of a
book, find a reliable source or ask for help.
*Below you can see what each letter stands for and its definitions*
S.M.A.R.T
Safe, meeting, Accepting, Reliable, Tell
Stay Safe Some of the reasons why you do not give out
your personal information is because they will
know where you live, possibly have access to
your accounts, and also can take your identity.
Don’t meet up You don’t meet up with people you met online
because they is a very good chance they are
lying about who they really are to convince you
to meet up with him/her and possibly be a plan
to take you away.
Accepting files Accepting files from an unknown person or
“bot” can cause serious or minor problems.
The causes of the issue can be an automatic
download when you click on the file and could
be a virus that’s being downloaded, also can be
a file that can be tracked by a Government for
illegal reasons.
Reliable Relying on someone online is risky because you
never know if the person is telling the truth. So
to be on the safer side, do not trust people you
meet online.
Tell Someone It is always great to have an adult you trust to
talk about anything that has occurred in the
internet with you if you feel worried that
something might happen to you and your
privacy. So have the adult look at what you
went in to so the adult can confirm you are ok.
Reflection
* As a class *
After having the group decision what did you find everyone shifted to when they talked
about SMART? Did anyone know it previous to this? If they did where did they learn it?
Were students able to identify where SMART could be inflected in social media correctly
give an example of when they could.
Reflection of the previous day:
Directions:
3.What do you remember from yesterday? What were some examples of the sticky notes that
were placed on the infographic? What was the best SMART story and answer? Who was the one
who gave the story and answer?
Directions:
4. Social media has made it hard for students to understand what is wrong and right.
Together as a class or in groups decide on what you think is wrong or right on social media
from the Kahoot survey we have provided.

*As a class*
How successful were you? Did everyone have a basic idea of the answers? Any of the
question surprise you if so why? Have a discussion about one of the questions and think of
a way to prevent a situation like it from coming up.
5. Directions:
Fake or real this is a topic within Instagram that is hard to differentiate. Have the students answer
these five question alone to see if they can tell the difference between the two.
