15th Sept. 2015 ENGINEER’S DAY

EVENT NAME: MODEL MAKING

(FOR MECHANICAL AND CIVIL ENGG. STUDENTS)
All the Participants of Mechanical and Civil Engg. WStudents of all semesters
of 1st and 2nd shift , on the ENGINEER’S DAY in Model Making event, they
have to come BRIDGE DESIGN USING POPSICLE STICKS with, rules are mentioned
below:

AIM: BRIDGE DESIGN USING POPSICLE STICKS

Event Fees : 50 Rs. Per student

EVENT RULES:

Bring from home

 Participants have to prepare the structure and bring it to the competition.
 As it is to be prepared at home, certificates will be awarded to all entries.

Team Specifications
 A maximum of 4 members are allowed in a team. All members of the team should be from the
same educational institute.
 Eligibility: All students with a valid student id card from A.RK.P College are allowed to
participate.

Bridge Specifications
 Construct a deck arch bridge (road/ pavement above the truss) of length 700 mm using standard
Popsicle sticks and adhesives.
 The bridge must have only two footings and the distance between their centers must be
500mm.
 Overlap criteria -The structure must be a truss (not a beam), not more than two Popsicle sticks
should be overlapped to make a truss member.
 Joint criteria -Joints should resemble a pin connection, so not more 15 mm of Popsicle stick
should be overlapped at joints.
 Footing width can be up to a maximum of 60mm and any number of Popsicle sticks can be
overlapped vertically (overlap criteria exempted) over a thickness of 15 mm from the base of
the footing.
 The roadway should be continuous and should allow a 10cm x 10cm vehicle to pass the entire
length of the bridge.
 The width of the bridge at any point shall not be more than 125 mm.
 Total height of the bridge from footing must not be less than 200mm and must not exceed
300mm. No truss members must be placed 50mm above the roadway.
 Loading will be done at the center of the bridge, so make sure that an area of 25mmx25mm at
the center is free from any truss members.

Materials
 The bridge must be constructed only from Popsicle sticks (120mm x 12mm x 2mm) and
adhesives (Synthetic white adhesive or single component cyanoacrylate adhesive).
 No other materials may be used. The bridge may not be stained, painted or coated in any
fashion with any foreign substance.
 The Popsicle sticks may be cut or trimmed to any shape or size.
 The adhesive can only be used to join Popsicle sticks together; however adhesives cannot be
applied on the free surface of the member sticks to increase its strength.

Loading Procedure and Grading Criteria

 Loading will be done at the center of the bridge
 The loading would be done on the bridge using a 5cm x 10cm loading plate on bridge center.
 All construction and material requirements will be checked prior to testing. Bridges failing to
meet these requirements will be disqualified.
 Deflection Test: The Bridge will be tested for a deflection of 15mm and will be rated according
to the load required.
 The bridge with the highest structural efficiency E, will be declared the winner. E= Load
supported in kg/ Mass of the bridge in kg
 All the dimensions mentioned are acceptable within an error range of + 5%. Any failure in
adhering to the specifications will lead to immediate disqualification.
 All decisions of the judges shall be final.
