Public Art For Lujiazui HARBOUR CITY
Public Art For Lujiazui HARBOUR CITY
Lujiazui HARBOUR CITY, located at the Lujiazui Central Business District in Shanghai,, is co-developed by
CITIC Limited and China States Shipbuilding Corporation. It is the world’s most advanced redevelopment to
become an iconic landmark of Shanghai, one of the most highly evolved cosmopolitan cities. In cooperation
with world famous master architects and architecture firms including OMA, Kengo Kuma , KPF and BENOY,
the former ship repair yard is turning into “Upscale City Complex.”
There we are launching a large-scale public art project with the aim of bringing a new breath of life to the newly
redeveloped area, creating an unparalleled urban cultural space for generations to come.
Public art will unfold at more than 40 sites throughout the 250,000 square meter district, which includes
financial institutions, commercial landmarks, an art center, residential areas, and hotels.
Ever since the opening of its port hundred and eighty years ago, Shanghai has been a major center of
international trade. The city embraces its historic buildings and its ever-deepening cultural strata, which give its
neighborhoods highly varied characters. Interactions with the peoples from many lands who flock to Shanghai
continually deliver new energy and creativity to the city. Public Art for Lujiazui HARBOUR City will celebrate
and disseminate those urban experiences and Shanghai’s distinctive identity by inviting artists from around the
world to participate in the project.
The project is directed by Fram Kitagawa, known for his success with the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and
Setouchi Triennale, along with 15 world-renowned twenty-first-century artists. They will be joined by 28
talented emerging artists from around the world selected through an open call for proposals.
“Space-Time Vessel Travelling Through the Universe” is the organizing theme for Public Art for Lujiazui
HARBOUR CITY. By seeding urban public spaces with works of art expressing the ideas of artists around the
world, Luijiazui HARBOUR CITY will symbolically reflect the diversity and the contemporaneity of our
twenty-first-century world.
