Question

The plan and elevation of a three-story RC School Building is shown in the figure below.
The building is located in seismic Zone 2B. The type of soil encountered is soft rock and it is
proposed to design the building using an intermediate moment resisting frame. Consider a
uniformly distributed dead load of 8 kN/m2 and an imposed live load of 4 kN/m2 on the
typical floors. The live load on the roof is 2 kN/m2.
All columns are 400 x 400 mm. Take fc´ = 35 MPa.
a. Determine the elastic period of vibration for the structure using the generalized
parameters coordinates and method A of the UBC 1997.
b. Determine the design base shear using the static force procedure.
c. Determine the design shear force in each story.
d. Assuming the floors are rigid diaphragms, determine the design shear force for an
exterior column at ground floor level. Note: Take the accidental torsion into
consideration.
e. Compute the redundancy factor for this frame.
