SUMMARY OF DEVELOPMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH COMMUNICATION OR

HEALTH PROMOTION PROGRAMMES

Influenza “Flu” campaign

Approximately 3,000 doses are procured yearly through the PAHO EPI Revolving fund
for specific priority groups:

 Healthcare workers (HCWs)

 Pregnant women

 Parliamentarians

 Institutionalized persons

 The elderly over 65 years

The uptake of the annual influenza vaccine, historically however, has been very poor
(usually less than 15%) especially among healthcare workers.

The 2015-2016 ‘flu’ was particularly challenging as there were 2 deaths in HCWs, which
resulted in an increased demand for the vaccine (3 times the normal available supply).

The decision was therefore taken to develop a National Plan of Action to adequately
prepare for the 2016-2017 flu season, by ensuring that there would be adequate supply
of vaccine for all priority groups and funding would be in place to ensure procurement of
same.

A major part of this plan was the public awareness which was geared towards informing
the public of the importance of getting the vaccine for key groups and therefore
improving the uptake. The uptake improved from less than 15% to approximately 41%
in 2016-2017.
