Why color?
If a chemical is colored, it must absorb light; the
color is the transmitted portion that is not absorbed.

To absorb light energy, the atom must have an


empty electronic orbital that is just a little higher in
energy than the filled orbitals.

The d-orbitals of transition elements generally meet


this requirement.
