Heritage Uxbridge
Heritage Uxbridge is a committee of dedicated
volunteers commissioned by Uxbridge Council to act
as an advocate for the preservation and
conservation of heritage properties in the Township
and to advise on matters related to heritage and
cultural aspects. In past years, the committee has
developed and organized guided tours, and
published articles and maps that help promote
Uxbridge’s cultural heritage. The committee also
seeks to identify local structures for potential
Ontario Heritage Act designation.

In 2017, to celebrate our rich heritage as well as to

celebrate Canada's 150th birthday, we worked with
the Township to implement a historical walking tour
program on the new tourism website, www.discoveruxbridge.ca. We are also looking
at expanding our current Register of Municipal Heritage properties. Finally, we have
worked with the Museum Advisory Committee to denote and identify the area that
was once known as Quaker Hill (the earliest known part of Uxbridge).

A few years ago, an award called the ‘Heritage Appreciation Award’ was established by
the committee to recognize individuals “for taking the initiative and action to preserve
our past”. This year, we will continue to recognize local area heritage farms as well
homes of heritage or cultural value through the Pride Plaque Program. Working with
Council, we successfully identified the distinctive heritage area formerly known as
‘Gouldville’ by way of specially designed street signs. We have also been instrumental
in providing advice on the potential move of an OHA designated home to enable Uxbridge Library
development of land on Mill Street.

The Heritage Sign Bylaw Guidelines are used as a reference and to help promote a
heritage ‘look’ in the downtown district; information and ideas on improving building
facades, windows and general landscapes in keeping with a heritage appearance can
be found at the Township of Uxbridge office. We also continue to work with local
businesses in adding historic murals to their buildings, including Vince’s Market,
Shoppers Drug Mart, Mark’s Work Warehouse, A&W and Rexall PharmaPlus. We have
asked Council to be included in the redesign and renovation of the Township Office sign.
