Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Intro to Film Techniques Subject: English/OSSLC Grade: 11 College Date: November 22
Strand: Media Studies/Building Reading Skills Location: Classroom Time: 74 minutes

Lesson Plan Description- (one/two paragraphs with general details about what you will do and how you will do it)

As students enter the classroom they will be asked to vote in favour of two clips (there will be four options: Psycho, The Golden
Eye, Jaws and Dexter) later in class the three most popular will be watched. The lesson will be introducing the film techniques of
camera shots, angles, movement, sound and lighting to students. The first portion of the lesson will be via a powerpoint
presentation with images and short clips to help student understanding of the techniques being discussed. Students have a fill in
the blank handout to complete at this time. After the techniques have been covered students will move into a short film analysis
on their second handout. The first clip is to be analysed as a class with the teacher leading and making notes on the board. If
student understanding seems adequate they are to complete the analysis of the second clip in small groups. The third clip can
either be analyzed as a small group or individually.

I can: identify various film techniques while watching a piece of media

I can: explain how the film technique being used works within the piece of media (audience reaction, creation of mood, setting the
scene etc)

Assessment – how will I know students have learned what I intended? How will they know if they’ve met the learning goals?

What Teachers Do: What Students Do:

Minds on: Motivational Hook/engagement /introduction (5-15 min)

Establish a positive learning environment, connect to prior learning, set the context for learning, predetermine key questions to guide lesson

*Handout student handouts (Film techniques/Film Analysis) (3 minutes) *Settle into class and look over handouts
*Give a quick recap of previous lesson (Media Concepts) (2 minutes) *Listen attentively
*Facilitate student discussion on film/tv (5 minutes) *Respond to teacher’s questions and give input

Questions to consider: How much time do you spend watching tv/film a week? A day?
What was the last movie you watched? What was the first that you remember? What makes a film/tv show memorable?

contribute to class discussion

Consolidation & Connection (Reflect and Connect) (5-15 min.) Help students demonstrate what they have learned, provide
opportunities for consolidation and reflection

Students are to hand in their log at the end of class.

Extension Activities/Next Steps (where will this lesson lead to next)

This lesson is leading into a hands on activity of practicing the film techniques learned. Within the week students will be doing an
assignment where they need to analyse a film/tv show through film techniques. Later in the unit students will be creating and
shooting their own script through which film techniques are necessary.

Personal Reflection (what went well, what would I change, what will I have to consider in my next lesson for this subject/topic)
