Harvesting the Storm: An Ecological Fable from West Papua

Anggadi Tupa Menuai Badai: Cerita Alam Tanah Papua

John Waromi

The first-ever novel by a Papuan author, this story of generosity, greed, and resilience
follows the friendship of Andevavait, a tide-pool blenny; Bohurai, a greedy toad-fish; and
Anggereai, an observant striped-crab, as they adventure amongst tidal rock-pools and
upon the shore. In this ecological parable, John Waromi shows the effects of “harvesting
the storm” and reaping the results of actions beyond our control. He sheds light on not
only the ecology of the southern Papuan coast but also the lives of its people and their
culture that has always sustained natural diversity and maintained a balance with
nature over the centuries.

John Waromi was born in 1960 in Hollandia, now Jayapura, in West Papua. After
studying law at Cenderawasih University, he moved to Jakarta in 1986 and joined
Indonesia’s most famous dramatic troupe, Rendra’s “Bengkel Teater”. As an actor he
performed throughout Indonesia as well as touring New York, Japan and Korea. John
was invited to the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival in 2006, followed closely by an
invitation to the Balinale International Film Festival, also in Bali, and the Northern
Territory Writers Festival, in Darwin, Australia. He now lives and writes in his home
province.
