BUILDING THE BIGGER PICTURE

3D machine control – normal production method in Destia
• Destia has utilized machine automation in more than 200 projects since 2007
• Destia has up to 70 3D machine control units for excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, motor graders
and drill rigs
• Destia has nationwide network of experts for supporting machine control
• Modelling and machine automation have provided significant benefits for infra construction –
improved quality and efficiency

Model based production for main contractor

• Design data is modelled and visualized

• Combination model is used for quality control and work planning
• Production model are made by designers and finalized by surveyors
• Machine control models are available for site people by mobil devices
• Model based quality control is used - transparent as- built data in cloud

Introduction – Model based quality assurance in
road contruction (MBQ)
• Traditionally quality assurance measurements have been
performed manually by surveyors
• measuring and processing thousands of points manually – lot of labour
needed
• too much (useless) paper work
• delayed quality results
• By using machine control systems work quality is more accurate
and homogenous
• Height and width documented at same time as the structure is
completed
• MBQ method has used to replace traditional manual quality
assurance by
• documenting the position accuracy of build structures during
completion
• producing real time view of production quality (Infrakit)
• organizing production model and quality data (Infrakit)
• decreasing unnecessary work

10
Model based quality assurance process:
2. Machinery accuracy check
1. Infra models check

4. As-Built data in cloud 3. Quality measurements by using machines

& mobile quality control
Transparent MBQ process:

1. Checking and finishing of the machine control

models
2. Documented accuracy checks of
• GNSS positioning and machine control
systems (accuracy limits – calibration)
3. Real time follow-up measurements:
• Machine operators guide
• Map, cross sections, as-built data
• Browser and mobile
• Interface for clients and supervisors
4. Manual surveying of the completed structure
with tacheometer every 200 m (road) or
50x50 m square (area)

12
New applications - model based density control
• Utization of motor grader and soil compactor with machine control
systems and GNSSS –positioning
• Used for density and height control of the compacted layers
• Grader: 98…99 % of as-built measurements within ±20 mm
• Compactor: 85… 92 % of as-built measurements within ±20 mm

13
Model based production and quality assesment -
Conclusions

• Finalized production models, wide use of machine control

systems and skilled professionals are needed for MBP
• MBQ provides transparent follow up and control
• Quarantie that work is done by quality demands
• Less faults and waiting time at construction site
• Less resources needed than in traditional quality control
• GNSS –positioned compaction machine – new method
used for quality assurance
