Problem statement: What is the effect of increasing the habitat area to the

population size of the birds?

Aim: To estimate the population size of the birds.

Hypothesis: The larger the habitat area, the bigger the population size of the
birds.

Variables: Manipulated variable: The habitat area

Responding variable: The population size of birds

Constant variable: The bird species

Materials: Birds, birds trap, birds food

Apparatus: Ring

Technique: Capture, mark, release and recapture technique

Procedure: 1. Select a suitable habitat.

2. Capture 20 or more birds using a birds trap.

3. Mark each bird captured with a ring.

4. Record the number of birds in the first sample.

5. Release the birds back to their habitat.

6.After three days,a second sample of birds captured at the same

habitat.Count the number of birds captured in the second

sample.

7. Count the number of marked birds in the second sample.

8. Tabulate the data and estimate the population size of the birds.

9. Repeat the experiment with a larger habitat area.

Tabulation of data:

Habitat area Number of birds from the first Number of birds from the second
capture capture
Total number Number of marked
birds

Conclusion: Hypothesis is accepted. The larger the habitat area, the bigger the

population size.
