Mini-Lesson: Listening with Empathy (60 minutes)

Section Details Time/Materials

Hook Why is it important to listen to our friends, family and people around 5 min
us? Turn and talk about a time you had a meaningful conversation
with someone who you felt listened to you throughout the entire
conversation. After turning and talking, students will share whole
group their thoughts on effective listening.

Objective SWBAT listen with empathy by engaging in my meaningful 5 min


conversations with their peers.
Students will discuss the objective in partners. Whiteboard
marker

Introduction to I will ask students what they know about listening and empathy. After, I 10 min
New Material will review the following vocabulary:
Empathy Paper and pencil
Listening for each student
I will go over the anchor chart “Active Listening” and have students
keep that in mind when filling out what they know about listening with
empathy.

K (Know) We are going to practice what we know about listening with empathy. 15 min
I want you to fill out the worksheet and tell me about your experiences
of listening with empathy. You have 10 minutes to complete this. After Chart paper
completing the worksheet, students will share whole group what they Marker
wrote.

Activity In partners, students will answer the following questions using the 15 Min
active listening strategies we went over:

Talk about a time where you felt hopeless.


Why did you feel this way?
How did you pick yourself up again?
Who was helpful in this situation?

Closing Students will complete a reflection sheet sharing their reactions and 10 min
feelings about how they actively listened with empathy.
