Poblacion II, Malinta, Valenzuela City

Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

There has been an increase in the trade of counterfeit goods over the world and

this has become a global phenomenon (Hamelin, Nwankwo & Hadouchi, 2013).

They are everywhere and anyone can afford them due to very prices versus the

originals. The word “counterfeit” is an adjective that made to look like an exact

copy of something in order to trick people (Merriam Webster, 2018). Bian and

Moutinho (2011) looks at counterfeit as those products bearing a trademark that

resembles or identical to a registered trademark and which infringe on the rights

of the holder of the trademark. Whichever the case, several research agree that

trade in counterfeit goods has continued to grow over the years (Tom, Garibaldi,

Zeng, and Kempen, 2003; Marcketti and Shelley, 2009). That is why we should

do something about it. Counterfeit goods are so popular in the Philippines. In

fact, numerous cases of smuggled counterfeit goods took place in the country.

One of the most notable cases happened in November 21, 2017, wherein the

customs seized 3 Billion Pesos worth of cosmetics, branded clothes, and other

luxury items. With that, it greatly affect the economy and the original

manufacturers of the items greatly affect their revenue because consumers will

prefer to buy counterfeit products to gain supremacy. Nowadays, counterfeit

products are so popular the market to the fact that almost everyone wear them

especially teenagers. Many teenagers wear imitation of fashion products to get

involved in the fashion trends.

The researchers aspire to find out why customers prefer a product imitation even

if it is illegal. They also want to determine the impact of launching counterfeit

products in the market through its costumer; to know the reasons why they are

still buying product imitations; to find out if they know the consequences in buying

fake products; and to know what is their purpose or intention in buying counterfeit

products.

The purpose of the researchers is to know the inclemency of the counterfeit

products in its local consumers, specifically at the vicinity of Valenzuela. They

want to know the reason why people prefer buying imitated goods even if it has

low quality or substandard. Are the existence of counterfeited products really

satisfies its costumers desire product .They also want to know if it has a good or

bad result to the economic business.
