Quezonian Educational College, Inc.
Computer Science Department

II. Course Information

Course Title: Modern Physics
Course Code: NS3
Course Credit: 4 units
This is a general education course intended for Associate in Computer Technology and Bachelor of Science
in Computer Science.
Students are introduced to a number of topics under the following broad subject areas: dynamics, statics,
electricity, heat, materials, health and safety. Topics include: (i) Introduction to Physics: Exploring basic concepts
of physics: mechanics, heat, electricity, and waves. (ii) Mechanics and Heat: statics and kinematics, vectors,
equilibrium, kinematics and dynamics of a particle, force energy, momentum, rotation, elasticity, stresses and
strains, simple harmonic motion, and the behavior of fluids, Newton’s laws of motion, linear and angular
momentum, work and energy, and properties of solids and fluids (iii) Electricity, Magnetism, and Light: classical
electricity and magnetism include electric potential, current and resistance, dc circuits, magnetic forces and fields,
and electromagnetic induction, the nature of light and the principles of geometrical and physical optics (iv)
Modern Physics: alternating current, electromagnetic waves, kinetic theory of gases, thermodynamics, and
modern physics -- special relativity, quantum mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics, nuclear radiation, and
nuclear energy. (v) Introduction to health and safety in Engineering: examining health and safety issues relating
to the engineering practice.

III. Student Learning Outcomes

The students in Computer Course will have an understanding of the basic electronics and electricity. Students
will discuss fundamental theories and concepts underlying modern physics and extend the concept in laboratory
setting. The concepts will include the advancement of science using computer, how scientific discoveries have made
computer smaller, faster and powerful and how frontiers in physics are being addressed using computer based
techniques. Students will see the very close relationship that exists between physical world and advancing science to
better understand natural phenomena.

IV. Suggested Course Materials

Any physics book

V. Method of Instruction
Lecture, Reporting, Research and Laboratory Works

VI. Evaluation and Policy

The final grade is a combination of quizzes, major examinations, recitations, research papers, presentation
and/or reporting, and laboratory projects.

Incomplete grades should be complied within a year after issuance of rating sheet.

VIII. Class Policies

As a general policy, no special or make-up tests for missed exams other than the final examination will be
given. However, a faculty member may give special exams for A. approved absences (where the student
concerned officially represented the SCHOOL/Department at some function or activity). B. absences due to serious
illness which require hospitalization, death in the family and other reasons which the faculty member deems
meritorious.
If a student missed two (2) examinations, then he/she will be required to take a make up for the second
missed examination. If the student has no valid reason for missing an exam/quiz (for example, the student was
not prepared to take the exam) then the student receives 0% for the missed quiz/exam.
Students who get at least 95% in every quiz are exempted from taking the final examination. The final
grade of exempted students who opt to take the final examination will be based on the prescribed computation
of final grades inclusive of a final examination. Students who missed and/or took any special/make-up quiz will
not be eligible for exemption.
Learning outputs are required and not optional to pass the course.
Students who are absent from the class for more than 5 meetings will get a final grade of 0.0 in the course.
Only students who are officially enrolled in the course are allowed to attend the class meetings.
