Experiment 4

Heat Transfer Analysis in a HT33 Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

Name: Tugaoen, Sam Denielle S. Date ________________

Section 4CHEA Group No. 1

1. What are the critical parts in the operation of this HT33 shell and tube heat exchanger?

The critical part is learning how to operate the heat exchanger through the computer by
manipulating the flow rate and temperature.

2. Study the present set-up of the shell and tube heat exchanger in the laboratory. Compare it with
this type of heat exchanger.

The shell and tube heat exchanger in the laboratory is an HT33 shell and tube heat exchanger. It
consists of tubes in parallel enclosed in a cylindrical shell. Heat is transferred between one fluid flowing
through the tubes and another fluid flowing through the cylindrical shell around the tubes. Baffles are
included inside the shell. The miniature exchanger supplied is designed to demonstrate liquid to liquid
heat transfer in a 1-7 shell and tube heat exchanger (one shell and 7 tubes with two transverse baffles in
the shell).

3. Draw a schematic diagram of this HT33 shell and tube heat exchanger. Label the necessary
parts. Indicate the inlet and outlet points for the hot and cold fluid.

4. What is process control and how was it applied to the operation of this HT33 Heat Exchanger?

Process control is a combination of control engineering and chemical engineering disciplines

that uses industrial control systems to achieve a production level of consistency, economy and safety
which could not be achieved purely by human manual control. In the experiment, four thermocouple
temperature sensors are labeled T1 to T4 for identification and are measured by the use of the
computer.

5. Name industries where the operation of this equipment is necessary.

A heat exchanger is necessary in numerous industries such as the petroleum industry, nuclear
energy, waste water treatment, food processing industry, pharmaceuticals and biochemical processing.
