Solving Acceleration Word Problems

Article Title: Slipie Week

By: Owen Kevorkian

1. What is another term for acceleration when it’s negative, and provide an
example of this from the article. Deceleration, in the article they say that after
the halfway mark Josh starts to slow down.

2. Which lubricant in the article has a greater rate of acceleration as compared to the
other lubricant? Provide evidence to support your answer. Butter has a greater rate of
acceleration than ketchup. Butter accelerates at a rate of 1.2 ft/s2 because 12 ft/s - 0
ft/s over 10 s equals 1.2 ft/s2. Ketchup accelerates at a rate of 0.13uj ft/s2 because 4 ft/s
- 0 ft/s over 30 s equals .13 ft/s2.

3. What term and/ or phrase does the writer use in the article to imply that (an
object) is at rest, as in it is not moving? Josh falls and breaks his bones meaning he
isn’t moving.

4. What two pieces of information does the writer include in the article that are
irrelevant, as in they do not provide information to solve for speed or acceleration?

2. Which (object) in the article has a greater rate of acceleration as compared to
the other (object)? Provide evidence to support your answer.

Rate of acceleration for truck with red fire: 70 mph - 40 mph over 1/1200
hour (3 seconds) = 36,000 mi/h2.
