2. Introduction to SR03-01
Scandinavian Micro Systems provides a series of NMEA to Synchro Converters for driving various
"old style" Mechanical Synchro Repeaters using Digital Heading Data. All of the units can read
various digital serial formats as supplied by modern gyrocompasses primarily NMEA 0183, but also
other proprietary formats. SR03-01 Universal NMEA to Synchro Converter models can be
configured to drive different type of Mechanical Repeaters depending on voltages and frequencies
required.
The ScanRepeater™ SR03-01, Universal NMEA to Synchro Converter is shown in a system using
the existing Gyro Repeater Synchro Distribution Unit - driving the existing mechanical repeaters.

The Universal NMEA to Synchro Converter units will allow you to exchange your old Gyro Compass,
but keep the old Mechanical Repeaters and the old cabling, thus saving time and money when
converting to a new and modern Gyro Compass - see drawings below.

The gyrocompass feeds the same heading to both of the two Universal NMEA to Synchro
Converters. Only the primary SR03-01 must be aligned to the mechanical synchro repeater(s). The
primary and secondary SR03-01 will then run in "parallel" and be synchronized producing the same
output signals. When the primary SR03-01 falls out - an external changeover relay will switch out
primary SR0301 synchro signals and in the secondary SR03-01 synchro signals. The primary SR03-
01 controls the external changeover relay with a switchover relay control signal.

NOTE: For heading monitor / Compass compare functionality SR03-03 is required to indicate alarm
status to the staff on the bridge.
The ScanRepeater™ Universal NMEA to Synchro Converters have built in automatic “shutdown”, in
case of short-circuit, over-current, critical temperature.
All of these alarms are OR-ed into one alarm function so that any one of these conditions will start
flashing the Alarm light on the Front panel, drop the Alarm Output Relay and start the Sound Alarm.
The Alarm Output Relay will also activate in case of Power Loss to the unit. To silence the Alarm;
Press the ALARM Button (Red). Details about the alarm can be read from the display.

To control a synchro motor you need three phase signals S1,S2 and S3 and two reference signals
R1 and R2. Definitions of the synchro signals are: R1 to R2 = KE sin ωt S1 to S3 = E sin ωt sin (θ) 0
S3 to S2 = E sin ωt sin (θ + 120 ) 0 S2 to S1 = E sin ωt sin (θ + 240 )
6.2.2 Synchro Disconnected State (Alarm active) When a critical alarm is active the synchro output
will be disconnected in the following way: 1. The synchro output signal will be faded out. 2. The
Change Over relay signal will close the NC contact and open the NO contact. 3. The Alarm Relay will
close the NC contact and open the NO contact. 4. The Alarm Light will start flashing red. 5. The Alarm
Sounder will start Pulsating. 6.2.3 Synchro Soft Start If the critical alarm conditions are removed the
synchro output will follow a soft start algorithm: 1. The Alarm Sounder will stop Pulsating. 2. The
Alarm Light will stop flashing red. 3. The Alarm Relay will close the NC contact and open the NO
contact.
The Change Over relay signal will open the NC contact and close the NO contact. 5. The synchro
output signal will fade in. (2200 msec.)
If SR03-01 looses the 24 VDC inlet power supply when the mechanical repeaters are running the
output heading will be stored in a Non Volatile memory before shutting down the system. When SR03-
01 restarts - the stored heading (recovered heading RH) will be used to synchronize the mechanical
repeater with the serial data input heading. 6.3.1 Recovery after shutdown at high speed If SR03-01
shuts down when the mechanical repeaters has an high speed, the mechanical repeaters positions
when it stands still will be unknown for SR03-01. This will lead to one or more degrees misalignments.
The effect of these will dependent on the mechanical repeater type and specification. If this should
happen – just align the SR03-01 once more.
SR03-01 measures the 24 voltage power supply input current. The following overload ALARM
algorithm is design in SR03-01: If the average current in 320 msec. exceeds the Current Limit it will be
generated an Overload alarm. The Current Limit is changeable in the set-up menu. When the
synchro output is overloaded, the synchro output will be turned off in 10 seconds. The current will
then fall down to under the Current Limit and SR03-01 will then soft-start the synchro output again.
PRECAUTION: If this repeats successive 10 times - SR03-01 will NOT continue to setup the synchro
output again. The user must then power cycle/reset SR03-01. The system needs maintenance. If the
synchro output runs for more than 60 seconds without any Overload alarm the 10 times counter will
be reset to 0.
SR03-01 has a built in load test that will detect if a Mechanical Repeater is stuck and give a Warning
(non-critical alarm). SR03-01 senses the abnormal/unequal load when a repeater gets stuck. If the
stuck repeater is removed the stuck repeater indicator will be removed. 6.5.1 Stuck repeater
calculation To calculate a stuck repeater the Rate of Turn need to be between 0 and 60 degrees per
minute and the synchro signal requires rotating one turn. It is not possible to do this calculation if the
heading stands still. 6.5.2 Stuck repeater indication Stuck repeater warning will not trigger the alarm
output relay and the buzzer. The ALARM led on the control panels and a blinking line in the display
will indicate the fault.
SR03-01 has a transformer for generating power to the Mechanical Repeater Light for some specific
synchro formats. The Light will sink effect from the output reference signal so the Light load will be
additional to the normal synchro reference mechanical repeater load. Se the 11.4.3 Synchro Signal
Output Connections including the Repeater Light connected for how to connect the transformer and
SR03-01 booster requires phase voltage equal as given for the Mechanical Repeater. The Mechanical
Repeater can be seen up on as a transformer so the Reference voltage R1/R2 will be transformed to
a secondary voltage at the Phase signals MRS1/MRS2/MRS3. If the Phase voltage returned from the
Mechanical Repeater is higher than the Phase voltage generated in the SR03-01 S1/S2/S3, the
Phase voltage amplifier in SR03-01 need to sink the returned power witch again generates more heat
inside the converter. Mechanical Repeater SR03-01
R1 R2 S1 S2 S3 MRS1 MRS2 MRS3
So be sure that SR03-01 generates equal phase voltage (S1/S2/S3) compared with given or
measured Mechanical Repeater values (MRS1/MRS2MRS3)!
7.3 Find the correct Phase voltage for the Mechanical repeater
For some mechanical repeaters you will only find reference voltage and frequency given for the
synchro motor. SR03-01 requires both the Reference and Phase voltages given with the correct
transformer ratio for the mechanical repeater. Follow the procedure to find the correct Phase voltage:
Mechanical Repeater SR03-01
R1 R2 S1 S2 S2 MRS1 MRS2 MRS3
Disconnected
1. Disconnect all repeater(s) from SR03-01. 2. Use the synchro customize menu to setup SR03-01
with the correct Mechanical Repeater reference Voltage and Frequency - R1/R2. Do not care about
the Phase voltage. See 7.6 How to customize the Synchro Output. 3. Connect ONLY the Reference
signals R1/R2 from SR03-01 to only ONE mechanical repeater – let the mechanical repeater phase
signals S1/S2/S3 be disconnected.
Turn the compass manually around. Then measure and find the maximum RMS AC Voltage between
MRS1/MRS3. This maximum RMS voltage is then the “correct phase voltage”. Then you can calculate
the transformer ratio: TransRatio = VR1/R2 / Vmax(MRS1/MRS3).
To enter the ”Select Synchro Format” menu, it is necessary to follow this procedure:

Primary/Secondary Changeover Control Relay To setup a redundancy system with an additional
SR03-01 as backup – the primary SR03-01 has a relay output signal to control an external
changeover relay. This external relay will then switch the synchro signals between the main and
backup converter (SR03-01). The external changeover relay needs five (5) poles/contacts for
R1,R2,S1,S2 and S3. See Chapter 2.3 Redundant Operation w/one Gyro Compass.
The specification for the change over control relay is given below. Table 6 Change Over Control Relay
