CHEE 3321 “Analytical Methods in Chemical Engineering”

Spring Semester, 2018

Homework 1
Finish by Tuesday, January 30th, 2018

All problem numbers refer to “Advanced Engineering Mathematics” by Zill & Wright,
Jones & Bartlett Learning, 6th Edition.

Section 1.3 (p. 25-30)

1. Problem 1.3.9: Suppose a large mixing tank initially holds 300 gallons of water in
which 50 pounds of salt has been dissolved. Pure water is pumped into the tank
at a rate of 3 gal/min, and when the solution is well stirred, it is pumped out at
the same rate. Determine the differential equation for the amount A(t) of salt in
the tank at time t. What is A(0)?
2. Solve the initial value problem (IVP) derived in point 1.

Section 2.2 (p. 48-50)

3. Problem 2.2.5: Solve =4 .

4. Problem 2.2.8: Solve = + .

5. Problem 2.2.12: Solve sin3 + 2 cos 3 =0

Section 2.3 (p. 57-59)

6. Problem 2.3.3: Solve + = .

7. Problem 2.3.6: Solve ′+2 = .

8. Problem 2.3.19: Solve ( + 1) + ( + 2) = 2 .

Problem 2.1.1:

A computer generated direction field for = − is given below. Use a different

colored pencil and draw an approximate solution curve that passes through each of
the indicated points (sketch by hand).

(a) (−2) = 1 (b) (3) = 0 (c) (0) = 2 (d) (0 = 0)
