TIMELINE OF TECHNOLOGY

 Timeline handout
 Mr. Smoker’s Ages of the World
 Stone Age (Beginning – 3300 BC)
 Bronze Age (3300 BC – 1200 BC)

 Iron Age (1200 BC – 450 AD)

 Middle Ages (450 AD – 1600 AD)

 Industrial Age (1600 AD – 1900 AD)

 Information Age (1900 AD – Present)

STONE AGE (BEGINNING – 3300 BC)

 Very agriculturally dependent

 Crops
 Berries

 Domesticated Animals
 Agricultural
 Food

 Rudimentary stones were used for tools

 People began to make tools for specific purposes
 Tools gave people power, both physically and socially
BRONZE AGE (3300 BC – 1200 BC)

 With the aid of melting techniques,

Bronze was utilized for human needs
 Atfirst, Bronze was simply decorative
 Soon used for tools and weapons

 According to “folktale:”
 The wealth of Troy was built on Bronze
 The Biblical city of Babylon rose during this Age
IRON AGE (1200 BC – 450 AD)

 Metallurgy
 Development of higher temperature melting
techniques allowed iron to be melted
 Tools for farming, woodworking, hunting, etc.
 Weapons for war
 Greeks discovered by adding carbon to the iron, it
created a harder metal, steel
 Social Change

 Possiblecatalyst for the Industrial Revolution
 Automation
 Rapid spread of ideas and knowledge
 Centralization of people around Industry
INDUSTRIAL AGE (1600 AD – 1900 AD)

 Industrial Revolution
 Invention of Steam (1698)
 Primarily powered factories, replacing the waterwheel
 Water Pump, Railroad, later the Automobile
 Innovation of Textiles
 Automation of cotton spinning and weaving
 Clothing, yarn, rope, bedding, etc.
 Development of Metallurgy
 Higher temperature furnaces with the burning of coal, which
replaced wood
 Improved mining techniques
 People began living in cities around industry
 What would happen as a result of this?
(Transportation, Medical, Sanitation, Housing, Farming)
INFORMATION AGE (1900 AD – PRESENT)

 Also known as the Digital Age or

Computer Age
 Power is moved from Industry to an economy
based on the manipulation of information
 Internet (1969)

 Media

 Invention of Personal Technologies

Definition of Technology Activity

 Stand-up, find a group of 3 people

 Create a definition of “Technology”
 What you just learned
 Previous experiences
 Personal thoughts and/or ideas

 Each member should record the group’s

definition in their packet
 All groups will share their definition

 Mr. Smoker will share his definition

Definition of Technology

 The collection of methodology and artificial

constructs created by human beings to
increase their probability of survival by
increasing their control over the environment
in which they operate.
 In the account of the Ages of the World,
technology is regarded as the lever of
greed, and as a symptom of moral decline
as it assists violence against nature.
 Changing the natural to our benefit.
Conclusion
