Traversing:

A traversing is measuring the distances and interior angles between points on the boundary of a
site.
Few points to be noted:
 Record rod heights (RH) and use same rod height (preferably 5 ft.) for simplification.
 If you need to move you total station anti clockwise to record interior angle. Deduct the
instrument given angle from 360. **(360 – HR)
 If you lock the vertical and horizontal lock knob, release the knob prior to moving the eye
piece.
 0set and angles can be found in ANG mode; Distances (HD, VD and SD) can be found in
EDM mode

Step 1: i. Set up instrument on Record hi

ii. Measure the
instrument height (hi)
iii. Put the plumb bob on
the backsight
Step 2: i. Sight the plumb bob
string
Front Face ii. 0set
iii. Press REP (ANG
mode) (to add the
direct angles)
iv. Turn to front sight
point (Prism rod)
v. HOLD Record HR, HD and VD
(write down a D beside the
data as a Direct angle data)
Flip the scope
Step 3: i. Sight the plumb bob
string
Reverse Face ii. Press REL to release
the angle
iii. Sight back at the
prism at front sight Record HR, HD and VD
(Write down a R beside the
data for reverse face data)
