Geographical Terms Lesson Plan
Geographical Terms Lesson Plan
Materials Required:
Classroom Atlas
Smartboard
Geographical Regions & Features worksheet
Teaching and Learning Activities: (Time allotments noted)
(activating, acquiring, applying) (ICT considered) (variety of strategies/activities; active thinking; questioning)
Activate: (5-10 minutes) As a whole class discuss what geographical features are – have students come
up with examples and what features exist where they live. Hand out the atlases and photocopied
version
Acquire: (10 minutes) Using both the atlas and the photocopy of the map go through the vocabulary
words. Call upon different students to read out definitions of different types of features. Have students
come up to the front and point out where the mountain, river, lake, desert, and island is as well as
highlight (important to the activity that follows). If the smartboard was working properly I would have
students come up and circle each feature that corresponds with definition.
Apply: (20 minutes) Explain the regions and features worksheet, do one example with the class. Explain
how and where to find different features. Ask them to work with a partner and finish the rest of the
worksheet. Take in for evaluation
Differentiation of Instruction:
(adaptations) (cultural diversity) (grouping)
Intrapersonal: Students will have the opportunity to participate in whole class discussion,
students will share the Atlas with their partner
Interpersonal: work individually to fill in worksheet
Visual / Spatial: Textbook pictures
Create an adapted version that allows for choice ie.) 3 out of the 7 continents -get together with
them and help decide what three they want to do (put star beside)
Opportunity for Assessment:
(as, of, for learning) (exemplars/closure) (pre-assessment; variety; check for understanding; provides feedback)
As: Class discussion surrounding the importance of features found throughout the world as well as
where they live (effects on their personal life)
Of: Continuation of knowledge and creation of engagement… As a whole class discuss terms, work
together to verbally explain what they mean and how they were created – get students who usually
don’t speak up to give examples
For: Using the Geographical Regions and Features handout have students work with a partner and use
their Atlas to find features on each continent. Make sure students include the name of the feature –
must be handed in at the end of class for evaluation assess understanding and ability to correctly use
an atlas
ELA – connect to literature and folk tales, paragraph development have students reflect on
where they live and how the features on the prairies are important
