SPLIT-SQUAD ACTION…the Mariners will be split today, with one half of the squad hosting the San
Diego Padres…the other hald of the Mariners squad will be on the road, playing the Kansas City
Royals at Surprise Stadium in Surprise…today is the first of two split-squad days for the Mariners:
March 17 vs. Los Angeles–AL (1:10 p.m.) and at Oakland (1:05 p.m.).
VS. THE PADRES…the Mariners and Padres meet for the second of three Cactus League games
this spring (also: March 25)…Seattle won the first match-up between the two clubs, 3-2, on Feb.
23…the Mariners will be the home team today and the road team in late March…Seattle was 2-1 vs.
its complex partner last spring, and leads the all-time Cactus League series 87-81-7…the Mariners

HIGH-POWERED TRIO…Robinson Canó, Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager have each recorded at
least 80 RBI in each of the last two seasons, making the Mariners one of three teams in the Majors

FIELD OF DREAMS…on October 5, 2017, Mariners head groundskeeper Bob Christofferson and
the Mariners groundscrew, along with a crew from A.M. Landshaper in Spokane, began a month-
long process of replacing the entire playing surface at Safeco Field…this marked the first complete
replacement of the ballpark’s playing surface since the original installation in spring of 1999…the
grass is from Country Green Turf Farms in Olympia, Wash., the original supplier of Safeco Field’s
turf…in addition to new grass, the dirt areas of the infield were replaced with about 260 tons of
clay from Salt Lake City, Utah…the project returned the entire playing surface to its original level,
lowering the elevation by about four inches.
OPENING NIGHT…for the first time since 2015 – and just the second time in the last 10 years – the
Mariners will open the regular season at Safeco Field…the Mariners will host the Cleveland Indians
on Thursday, March 29 at 7:10 p.m.…tickets for Opening Night and all Mariners home games are
available at Mariners.com/Tickets, the Safeco Field Box Office and any Mariners Team Store.
HEY GREG, AS YOU KNOW…Mariners minor league infielder Seth Mejias-Brean hit a pinch-
hit grand slam home run yesterday vs. the Cubs in Mesa…BUT DID YOU KNOW?…that there
have been two pinch-hit grand slam home runs in club history during the regular season?…Ben
Broussard hit the Mariners first pinch-hit grand slam home run on April 21, 2007 at Los Angeles-
AL…Franklin Gutierrez also belted a pinch-hit grand salami on July 21, 2015 at Detroit.

• Dependable - His 64 relief appearances were 3rd on the club behind Nick
Vincent (69) and Edwin Díaz (66).
• Stranded - Stranded 85% (44 of 52) of inherited base runners; best mark
in MLB (min. 50 inherited runners).
• Strong Start - Posted a 1.23 ERA (2 ER, 14.2 IP) with 13 strikeouts in his
first 23 relief appearances of the season, including 16 scoreless games to
start the year…allowed a run in just one of those 23 outings.
• In a Holding Pattern - His 20 holds ranked T12th in the American League.
• Save It - Struck out Chris Davis after inheriting bases loaded in the top
