Submitted by: Carlos Miguel Sta. Maria Benefits of the K to 12 Curriculum for Filipino Students! The new curriculum is a spiral system which allows the students to bring with them the necessary abilities for them to take in life. As a graduate from the previous system of the primary and secondary school levels, this system is entirely new and diverse for me. I may not know about this curriculum but my younger siblings do. They are currently under the new system now studying in grade 10 and 9. I asked them how different it was or how similar were the system. They told me that the curriculum focuses on subjects that will help us when we graduate senior high. Compared to the old system where high school just prepared us only for college. Our saying during high school as my teachers says is that high school is just a preparation for college, but for my siblings, senior high is a preparation for the world. That is very true especially here in the Philippines were some of the high school graduates cannot enter college due to financial issues, lack of requirements or lack of abilities required by the university. The best thing about the system is that you may start taking jobs right after high school. This works well with students who already have pre- set jobs or usually inherited jobs due to family dynasties in the Philippines. This helps especially with people in poverty, where graduates can apply for jobs they would like to take without having to go under a university. Be it as it may, the system still has its flaws. I asked, what were some of the problems within the new education system? My siblings told me that they do not want to graduate with two more extra years. They wanted to graduate fast and be in college where they can focus on specialized fields and courses. I guess, this is more of their opinion but it is still true. Some students feel like they waste two years of learning subjects they may or may not use in the future. Well, we cannot please everybody, but that’s the way the system works.
