Material Properties

and
Testing
(171602 S)

Prof. Dr. Eng. Abdelhay M. Abdelhay

Mechanical Engineering Department,
Faculty of engineering, Helwan University

1
What this
Course is all about ?
• The methodology of choosing the right
material for specific application based on its
properties, and its Expected Performance

also,

• The recognition of how and why these

properties might change due to Structure
and Processing.
2
This course in Materials Science , is
customize to understanding the
relationship between
structure, properties, and performance
in order
to engineer materials that fit the
Performance criteria for
specific applications.

3
• The basis of materials science involves
studying the structure of materials, and
relating them to their properties.

• Once a materials scientist knows about

this structure-property correlation,
they can then go on to study the
relative performance of a material in a
given application.

4
• The major determinants of the structure of a
material and thus of its properties are its
constituent chemical elements and the way in
which it has been processed into its final
product shape.

• These characteristics, taken together and

related through the laws of thermodynamics
and kinetics, govern a material's
microstructure, and thus its properties.

5
This is conveniently represented in the
form of a tetrahedron, generally known
as the material science paradigm

the Course Class mates,

2. Prepare a presentation for each topic, including:

main concepts, illustrative examples addressing the

presented topic, with ONE Updated Published Paper.

15
Here IS HOW ?

3. TWO days before the class meeting, Share your

presentation among the whole class members

(using the “ ‫ ”خواص المعادن‬Group – on WhatsApp),

4. Allow for your class mates to positively interact with

your presented topic.

5.Once, the topic is presented, it will be a learned

topic for the whole class.
