PERCEIVED FAIRNESS AND EMPLOYEE

PERFORMANCE: THE MODERATING EFFECT
OF LEADER - MEMBER EXCHANGE (LMX)
Mohammed Inuwa
Department of Business Administration, Bauchi State University Gadau, Nigeria

ABSTRACT

Neglecting an employee, showing little or no concern by a superior can have a

devastating effect on performance of such an employee, it gives a negative
perception particularly when the superior show more concern to other employees.
Such occurrences in the workplace give birth to organisational disharmony and lower
performance. It is therefore essential for organisations to ensure higher employee
performance through fair treatment of all employee which can be strengthened with
the presence of high LMX. The paper aims to examine the nexus between perceived
fairness and employee performance of non- academic staff of Bauchi State
University Gadau. With LMX as a moderating variable. Based on this, a total
number of two hundred and seventy questionnaires were given out to non- academic
staff of BASUG using systematic random technique and the data collected was
examined using regression analysis. The result of the study finds that there is
positive and significant relationship between perceived fairness and performance of
non- academic staff of the Univeristy. The study also finds that the moderating effect
of LMX on perceived fairness and employee performance is weak indicating that low
LMX decreases performance of employee in the University. Therefore, the study
recommends that for employee performance to be higher, it will be paramount for the
organisation to improve the quality of LMX as it will give the employee perception of
fairness in dealing with other co-workers. As high LMX can give employee sense of
belonging and trigger better interpersonal relationship which can translate to
increased performance. This study will serve as a policy guide to the management of
the University in areas relating to employee performance improvement and it will
also further make an impetus the field of organisational behaviour and human
resource management.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUPERVISOR

SUPPORT, PEER SUPPORT AND TRANSFER
OF TRAINING: A STUDY OF AN EDUCATIONAL
BOARD IN NIGERIA
Wasilu Suleiman, PhD.
Department of Business Administration, Bauchi State University-Gadau, P.M.B. 65,
Bauchi State, Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

This paper assessed the relationship between supervisor support, peer support and
transfer of training. Survey design approach through the distribution of questionnaire
was employed on an aggregate of 29,213 employees of State Universal Basic
Education Bauchi, Nigeria. A PLS-SEM algorithm and bootstrap was conducted for
testing the relationships between the selected factors in transferring training. The
result asceretained that the extent to which supervisors and peers support and
reinforce employees to transfer their training experiences would positively affects
transfer of training in the organization. Therefore, support from both supervisors and
peers are powerful mechanisms of improving training transfer. The success of
transfer of training does not only exclusively depend on the roles of employees,
nevertheless, is largely depended on the perceived support from both supervisors
and peers. Human resource trainers needs to comprehend the positive influencing
power of selected factors of work environment on employees’ positive training
transfer through prioritizing the culture of improved social support in their respective
organizations. Hence, human resource practitioners must expand the roles of
supervisors and peers in the organizations.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BYSTANDER

PARTICIPATION BEHAVIOR AND INNOVATIVE
CAPABILITY IN THE MALAYSIAN HOTEL

ABSTRACT

Innovative capability is one of the requirements for organizations to compete, to

survive and to succeed in the global competitive environment. Understanding why
some organizations are more innovative than others brought up the question of what
factors influence the success or organizations towards innovative capability.
Literature shows that there is no single factor for success for innovative capability,
but it does recognize that it is possible for every organization to discover where the
increased efforts must be focused in order to transform a specific success in a
process of continuous innovation and to achieve good results. It is vital to take note
that there are many other issues contributing equally to innovative capability. With
these issues, there is a need to further understand innovative capability. Therefore,
this study proposed the concept of bystander participation behavior on innovative
capability in the Malaysian hotel industry. The study is a quantitative method, which
tested the relationships between bystander participation behavior and innovative
capability. Questionnaires were distributed to more than 500 supervisors from four
and five star rated hotels in Malaysia registered in the directory of Malaysian
Association of Hotels, of which 208 usable questionnaires were considered valid.
Statistical evidence was found that there is a significant relationship between
bystander participation behavior and innovative capability.

ABSTRACT

Whilst employee turnover is a central issue for the hotel industry, developing
employee who embodies significant work behaviours has become a main priority for
hotel management. This is especially related to the modern workplace
characteristics with complex business environment and high uncertainties. The focus
of this study is to explore the perceptions of employees towards the role of HRM
policies and practices in assisting them to perform and contribute to the organization.
Employees’ perceptions are explored through their actual experiences with the
implementation of HRM policies and practices. Interviews were conducted with
employees in five different star-rating hotels so that the understanding of contextual
factors can be observed. Different perceptions on the role of HRM policies and
practices from that of intended expectations of the management are reported from
the interviews. Instead of acting as a medium to transmit the message of their work
expectations, employees view the HRM policies and practices like a common
process happening in their organization and unrelated to their work demand.
Therefore, findings of this study could light a torch of awareness for organizations to
give more attention on the employees’ responses and feedback in order to minimize
their dysfunctional behaviours that are detrimental for organizational achievement.
Suggestions are given to increase the employee significant behaviour that is relevant
to the organizations, from the perspective of AMO theory.

ABSTRACT

Members’ participation as a dimension of value co-creation behaviour refers to all

forms of customer involvement and engagement which is found to cause a
significant impact in the service organisation. For service context, members’
participation is suggested to be an effective means and viewed as a source of value
creation. Members in the context of this study refers to the customer of credit
cooperatives who have been using credit services and facilities provided by their
respective cooperative. Although there are a number of studies related to value co-
creation behaviour in service marketing literatures, there are still gaps to support the
relational aspects of co-creation in marketing concepts. A mediational model that
links members’ participation to service loyalty via member satisfaction is proposed.
We adopted Service Dominant (S-D) Logic and Social Exchange Theory as an
underpinning basis to develop the research framework of the study. Given its
positivist stance, a quantitative approach was adopted whereby self-administered
questionnaire was designed and pre- tested. A total of 500 copies of questionnaires
were distributed and 395 usable copies were collected and deemed usable after the
data cleaning procedure. Common method variance and non-response bias were
checked statistically and addressed. The study utilises variance-based structural
equation modeling to perform the latent variable analysis and to examine the
hypotheses empirically. The findings indicate that members’ satisfaction significantly
mediates the relationship between members’ participation on loyalty. This study
contributes to the research and management practice on the importance of
members’ participation by delving into its effect on satisfaction and loyalty in credit
cooperatives in Sarawak and developing economy.

ABSTRACT

Customer satisfaction is the primary aim of the services industry as satisfied

customers will stay loyal and the number of complaints is minimized. The long
standing complaints from customers concerning taxi services and the development
of technology integrated with smartphone applications have inflated the demand for
GrabCar services in many countries including Malaysia. Since the GrabCar service
is quite new in the Malaysia market, the influential factors that motivate consumers to
use GrabCars have not yet been studied in depth. The objective of this study is to
examine the level of customer satisfaction and the influencing factors affecting
customer satisfaction with the GrabCar service. Four factors have been considered
for this study: price, cleanliness, accessibility and safety. The data were collected
from 211 respondents who have experience of using the GrabCar service by means
of a self-administered questionnaire through an online survey. The results revealed
that the level of customer satisfaction with the GrabCar service is encouraging. The
results also showed that price, cleanliness, accessibility, and safety significantly
influence customer satisfaction with the GrabCar service. This study assisted
marketing managers to better understand the key drivers of the GrabCar service in
order to generate and uphold customer satisfaction as well as fidelity in an extremely
intricate market.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to explore the factors that influence consumers to
participate in U.S. chain restaurant boycott. Factors such as attitude on religiosity,
perceived control behavior and animosity are the most common factors that
contribute toward restaurant boycott found in the literature. Since Malaysia is one of
the popular country that attracts a lot of foreign investment including chain
restaurants businesses therefore it is important to identify what are the main factors
that caused the boycott. Thus, this study focused on Muslim consumers among
generation Y who live in Shah Alam. Generation Y often becomes the target
consumers for this type of restaurants. Questionnaire was used as the instrument for
this study and it is distributed using convenience sampling technique. A total of 136
respondents are used for this study and all questionnaires has been analyzed using
Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 21.0 software program. The
overall findings of this study indicate that animosity are the significant factors that
influence consumers to participate in U.S. chain restaurant boycott. For future
research, it is advisable to increase the sample size due to lack of generalization of
the findings. Despite of the small sample used in this study, the findings do highlight
the practical implication such as the impact of rumors and negative publicity that can
ruin brand image. Therefore, the affected organization should take necessary actions
to deal with the issue rather than ending up losing their market share. There are
previous studies that discussed on the factors that lead to boycott, however most of
these studies only focused on the specific restaurant. Instead of looking at specific
restaurants the current study tried to obtain consumers perception in general
towards U.S chain restaurants.

ABSTRACT

Securities firm is an important intermediary in the capital market to facilitate the

trading of securities and underwriting of shares. The industry landscape is mainly
impacted by globalization and technology advancement, and with indifference
products and services, it becomes a highly competitive industry. To remain
competitive and profitable, the players should always remain effective and efficient.
This study is to analyse the efficiency level of securities firms in Indonesia for the
period of 2008 to 2013. It is also to determine factors that impacted the efficiency
level. In the first stage analysis, a non-parametric method namely Data Envelopment
Analysis will be employed to calculate the efficiency score and ranks the firms.
Meanwhile, in the second stage, the score will be used to determine the factors that
influenced the efficiency level using Tobit regression. The result shows that foreign-
linked companies are more efficient compared to the local counterpart. Firm factors
such as company’s size and age have a positive relationship on efficiency level. On
macro level, gross domestic products (GDP) is noted to be highly correlated to the
efficiency score. On another note, majority of the securities firms are operating at
the decreasing return to scale, implicating that scaling down their operation may be
able to improve the efficiency level. This study is expected to benefits both the
industry players and policymakers.

ABSTRACT

Hotel industry is a labour intensive, therefore employees has become a critical

success factor. However job turnover has become a major problem in the hotel
industry. Literature suggested that fast changing environment and how service
operations are managed often lead to job stress which can results in increasing
employee turnover. Being a people intensive sector, hotel management need to find
way to retain their current employee. Thus the aim of this study is to determine the
impact of quality of work life towards intention to leave among hotel employees.
Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) is used to test the factorial validity of the
constructs, and the proposed model is analysed using Partial Least Squares (PLS).
Based on the survey of 200 respondents working in three, four and five star hotels,
the study’s findings indicated that there is a significant negative influence of quality of
work life towards intention to leave. Therefore, this study concludes that the
management of hotels need to concentrate on the quality of the work life of their
employees as it can reduce intention to leave and retain the current employees.

ABSTRACT

Although women in South East Asia has undergone enormous socio-economic

changes in the last few decades; most nations are still struggling to position women
as an active decision-makers both in home and at work. This is mainly due to the
traditional patriarchal behaviour and women’s lack of access to financial sources
(Daniell,2012). Apart from that, a stereotypical masculine workplace also creates a
false dichotomy of what women can and cannot do; such as holding a leadership
position. The known cause for this alarming socio-economic imbalance between man
and women and attitudes to gender-roles behaviour in South East Asia are mainly
due to the discerning social norms and culture.

ABSTRACT

Viral marketing is a marketing technique whereby information about a companys
goods or services is passed electronically from one internet use to another.
According to Dan Zarella, a social mediascientist, viral marketing is a strategy by
which a marketer creates a campaign focused around the goal spontaneously
spread it by sending it to friends by using social media such as Facebook and etc.
The growth of online social networks around the world has created a new place of
interaction and communication among people. Individuals can share their
knowledge, opinions, and experiences with one other due to the online social
networks provided features and may have an impact on people’s behavior in terms
of communication and purchasing. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact
of online social networks (Facebook) on consumers purchasing decision process.
Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) undertaking as a framework for the
investigation to support the findings. Perceive Usefulness and perceive ease of use
are use as independent variable and Consumer’s purchase decision represent as
the dependent variable. The data will be statistically analysed for reliability,
correlation and multiple regression. The result would help the industry and future
research area in finding the meaningful way to manage the complex issues
regarding viral marketing issues in Malaysia.

A STUDY ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL

FACTORS INFLUENCING GREEN
PRODUCTION ADOPTION: A CASE OF
MALAYSIAN SMES
Mohd Firdaus Ruslan, Mahazir Ismail
Faculty of Business and Management, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia

ABSTRACT

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is an important economic entity in most

countries including Malaysia. Statistic from SME Corporation Malaysia shows that
currently, there are 645, 136 SMEs and they contribute 32.7% of Malaysia’s Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) and the forecast will be 41% by 2020. Statistic also had
indicated that a large portion of the country’s environmental problems are associated
with the activities of SMEs and it is also believed that SMEs are primary source of
environmental problems. Therefore, the participation of SMEs in adopting
environmental friendly innovations is crucial in the effort to reduce environmental
problems. Hence, this study tried to investigate the environmental factors namely
environment uncertainty and customer pressure in influencing Malaysian SMEs to
adopt one of the environmental innovations which is green productions. Other than
that, this study also investigated the moderating influence of government
interventions towards the environmental factors. The result of this study revealed that
both environmental factors are significant in influencing the green production adoption.
However, customer pressure makes the strongest unique contribution rather than
environment uncertainty in influencing green production adoption by Malaysian SMEs. Other
than that, the result of this study also revealed that government intervention moderates the
relationship between environmental factors and green production adoption. It clearly shows
that government interventions such as financial support and incentive, technical assistance,
training, regulation, legislation and inspection will be a “push” factor for SMEs in Malaysia to
adopt green production.

ABSTRACT

This paper investigates the asymmetric exchange rate exposure of large non-
financial firms in ASEAN-4 (Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand). The
impact of the exchange rate movements on firm’s value (share return) is examined
using the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) approach. The
empirical evidence supports the view that large non-financial firms’ value are
affected by exchange rate exposure asymmetrically especially in Thailand and
Malaysia. The study results also showed that majority of the sample firms have
negative coefficient on the exchange rate movements implying majority of the
sample firms are net-importers to the country main trading partners. In addition,
sample firms were also affected by the multiple exchange rate movements. These
findings suggest that firms are not only exposed to exchange rate movements
symmetrically but also asymmetrically and with multiple exchange rate movements.
Therefore, the affected parties such as policymakers and financial managers must
realise this stylised exchange rate exposure to prepare appropriate hedging
strategies to mitigate the negative impact of the exchange rate movements.
Moreover, we suggest that different type of exchange rate exposure models should
be treated as complimentary analysis rather than a separate analysis to explain the
stylised exchange rate exposure.

ABSTRACT

This study attempts to examine the intention of financial behavioral change intention
using extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) to underpin the research’s
framework. Specifically, the objective of this study is to examine the effect of attitude,
subjective norms and perceived behavioral control on intention to change financial
behavior. In addition to that, financial literacy is incorporated into the model as the
antecedents influencing not only one’s attitude towards change in financial behavior
but also directly towards intention to change financial behavior. Data were collected
from undergraduate students in Malaysia (millennial generation) and analysed using
Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling. The findings suggest that all
claimed hypotheses were partially supported. Implication and contribution of the
study were discussed to justify the significance of this research.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of intellectual capital on financial
performance of Malaysian construction firms using value-added intellectual
coefficient (VAIC) model. The empirical data were drawn from a panel consisting of
41 construction firms listed in Bursa Malaysia and observed over the five-year period
of 2011 to 2015. Two regression models were examined in order to test the
hypotheses included in the conceptual framework of the study. Intellectual capital is
the independent variable in the study and measured by VAIC, HCE, SCE, CEE and
the dependent variable, financial performance, is proxied by ROA.The results
revealed that VAIC is positive and significantly associated with ROA. However, on
the components of intellectual capital, only CEE is positive and significantly
associated with ROA. The concentration on one industry and the relatively narrow
five-year period for data collection are the main limitations of this study. The value of
this study is the contribution towards intellectual capital literature by expanding into
construction firms and such a research is limited.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of capital structure on financial
performance of Malaysian construction firms. The empirical data were taken from 41
construction firms listed in Bursa Malaysia and observed over the five-year period of
2011 to 2015. Capital structure is the financing decision on the proportion between
debt and equity. The right proportion leads to optimal capital structure. This study
adopts two theory, Trade-Off theory and Pecking Order theory, to explain the
concept of optimal capital structure. Four regression models were examined in order
to test the hypotheses included in the conceptual framework of the study. Capital
structure is the independent variable in the study and are measured by STD, LTD,
TD, meanwhile the dependent variable, financial performance, is proxied by ROA
and ROE. The results revealed that LTD is positive and significantly associated with
ROE. However, STD and TD are negatively correlated with ROE. Similarly, STD,
LTD and TD are negatively associated with ROA. The findings suggest that financing
decision is influenced by the objective of the firms. If the goal of the firms is to
maximise return on asset, the pecking order theory is employed, however if the firms’
objective is to maximise return on equity than trade-off theory is appropriate to
explain the concept of optimal capital structure. The concentration on one industry
and the relatively narrow five-year period for data collection are the main limitations
of this study. The findings of the research will contribute towards capital structure
literature.

ABSTRACT

Life cycle costing (LCC) is a method of accessing the total cost of facility ownership
and has been used in foreign countries for the last few decades. Even though it has
been used widely in the foreign countries, our country still far behind as the
application of the LCC is not been used wide enough. In fact of that, in order to
increase the usage of LCC technique in Malaysia, each party that involved in the
industry should have their own awareness to implement the technique in our
industry. The implementation of LCC technique in Malaysia construction industry will
lead to a greater success in the field and will brings good increasingly-competitive
business environment, dwindling resources and an ever-increasing need to obtain
value for money in all areas of corporate activity. It is essential to plan and monitor
assets throughout their entire life cycle, from the development until the completion of
the project. Therefore, the main aim of this paper is to examine and evaluate the
awareness of LCC among the architects since the implementation of LCC should
start at the design stage. Feedbacks obtained from the questionnaire survey has
shown that there are still lack of awareness among architects about LCC
implementation during inception and briefing stage and this may lead into a few
issues in light of the fact that LCC is one of the vital components in bringing the
value for money to the construction projects. In-depth study of LCC is the crucial
factor to be considered at the early stage of the project, in order to ensure the good
returns and the best value for money to clients.

ABSTRACT

The research aims to investigate the interaction between foreign enterprises and
local firms, which focus on the understanding of FDI spillovers impact on crowding
effects, by taking into consideration both inter and intra industry spillovers, and some
proxies for barriers to entry and postpone exiting decision. By analyzing a dataset of
710,633 firms across 88 industries in Vietnam during 2007-2015, the research
reveals the foreign presence, as well as vertical spillover, stimulates the entry and
exit of domestic entrepreneurs. We also find that profitability, import competitiveness,
domestic industrial growth, and physical capital intensity have negative relationships
with local entry rate. Inverse impact of industrial scale on crowding in effect
demonstrates the distinctive of emerging market having low labor cost.

ABSTRACT

The imposition of Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been adversely affect the
competitiveness of shipping industry in Malaysia. Coupled with numerous of
challenges lay ahead, an effective working capital management (four main
components i.e. cash, inventories, accounts receivable and accounts payable) play a
crucial role in ensuring the survival of local shipyards. GST transactions would
directly reveal through the firms’ purchases and sales altogether with the best
attempts to recover all input taxes and simultaneously ensure that proper compliance
job is performed. This study intends to examine the impact of the goods and service
tax (GST) on the working capital management practices of shipbuilding business’s
operations in Sarawak. The findings of this study indicate that GST has mostly
affected the SBSR business in term of cash management as the firm has to hold
more cash on hand to settle debts and tax obligations on behalf of the customers.

ABSTRACT

Literature has revealed that abundant of arguments and reactions were received
from customer groups towards the implementation of Goods and Services Tax
(GST). This study attempts to examine the changes of undergraduates' spending
behavior subsequent the implementation of GST. Data were collected from 320
respondents in a private higher educational institution by adopting survey method.
Three determinants were employed in this research: attitudes, collective norms and
perceived behavior control that is theorized to form behavioural intentions and later
leading to actual behaviours. The findings suggest that collective norms and
perceived behavior have positive significant relationships with regards of intention to
spend. Additionally, this study discerns that students have the inclination to change
their consumption behaviours particularly in term of the number of times visiting the
shopping mall and average monthly expenditure.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to investigate the presence as well as direction of causal
relationship among tourism, CO2 emissions and economic growth by using the panel
data econometric technique based on data from 30 selected countries. Findings of
the study indicate that tourism, CO2 emissions and economic growth are significantly
related. Results from panel cointegration procedures suggest the presence of
common trend or long-run relationship among the series. Further, the panel Granger
causality test reveals that tourism and economic growth as well as economic growth
and the level of CO2 emissions are bidirectional (two-way causality). The practical
implication that could be conceived from this finding is that, a growth in the economy
would be followed by an increase in tourist arrivals, the level of energy consumption
as well as CO2 emissions. Therefore, in order to optimize healthy economic growth,
policy makers must consider current environmental problems and CO2 emissions
while promoting tourism and sustainable growth. Understanding the relationship
among tourism, CO2 emissions and economic growth is essential in generating
effective policies.

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to investigate how foreign direct investment (FDI) presence affects
the productivity of Vietnam manufacturing companies. By exploiting a firm-level
panel dataset of 87,195 Vietnamese firms across the nation in the five-year period
from 2011-2015, the results indicate that intra-FDI spillover has occurred in the North
of Vietnam, but no effect in the Central, South and Mekong River Delta. The study
also finds that domestically owned firms in Vietnam significantly suffer from FDI
presence. Such impact is less, however, severe for joint venture firms. Specifically, it
is suggested that in the case of Vietnamese firms, low technology gap firms have the
opportunity to learn and gain the beneficial aspects of spillover occurrence.
According to the result, a financial characteristic such as liquidity has a positive
relationship to firms’ productivity. Meanwhile, debt does not significantly affect firms’
productivity.

NATION’S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

THROUGH MICRO-ENTERPRISES
Baderisang Bin Mohamed
Universiti Teknologi MARA, (UiTM), Malaysia

ABSTRACT

This essay intends to assess the roles of micro-enterprises and how they
economically and financially help persons in Malaysia, particularly the unemployed
graduates. The development of micro-enterprises began as early as 1970’s. From
2010, Malaysia has witnessed a rapid growth of micro-enterprises and their
contribution to the economy. Studies indicate that the micro-enterprises mostly did
most transactions from 2010 to 2015. The micro-enterprise also contributed to most
paid employment with the main sector being the service segment. Many nations view
micro-enterprises as the core of their economies. They play the main role of income
generation and employment creation for the economy. Due to their importance,
micro-enterprises have experienced an exponential growth even though few scholars
are interested in studying them because of the limited sources of finance. In
Malaysia, micro-enterprises play the role of economic growth, employment creation,
and poverty reduction which ultimately leads to economic development. Economic
growth leads to the generation of a virtuous circle of prosperity and opportunities to
the population of an economy. The role of micro-enterprises is viewed as a channel
for addressing various social-economic issues, with the major issue being to
generate employment opportunities and alleviation of poverty. Overall, economic
growth, job creation, and poverty alleviation are the key indicators of economic
development of a country.

ABSTRACT

The successful implementation of biodiesel derived from waste cooking oil (WCO) is
highly dependent on the waste management mechanism to ensure sustainable
feedstock in terms of volume and price. In eco-tourism island of Langkawi Kedah
Malaysia, a comprehensive assessment has been conducted to assess hard data on
the recoverable WCO quantity from daily cooking oil utilization around the island.
The study assesses the rate of recoverability for WCO and volume projection to
anticipate feasibility of establishing a proper WCO Management Center within the
island, and furthermore the viability of biodiesel processing plant development in the
island. The results have indicated that, with availability of identified key enablers,
Langkawi has a good potential to be the first model of an eco-tourism island with
properly managed WCO, to be used as renewable energy resources in its
transportation and power generation sector.

ABSTRACT

The planning of a project begins with envision of ideas, concepts and targets of the
proposed construction development. Once set, all aspects of planning a
development must be thoroughly evaluated during the preliminary stage of the
Feasibility Study (FS). Matters that are related to technical, economic and financial
aspects of the proposed development must be critically appraised in the FS. Without
a well prepared FS, a development project can possibly fail due to issues such as
inferior building quality, poor workmanship and cost overruns. For this reason,
design consultants such as the architect, engineer and quantity Surveyor must
always be aware so as to understand the importance of information needed in the
preparation of FS. They should appreciate that the outcomes from an excellent FS
could bring many good values for the construction project. The aim of this paper is to
examine the importance of information required in the preparation of a FS and to
explore the understanding amongst design consultants about its significance.
Feedbacks obtained from the questionnaire surveys have shown that each
consultant sets different priorities and purposes in identifying the crucial of data that
they gathered during the FS. Though the main aim is to enhance the feasibility in
terms of cost, quality and time demanded by the client, the research suggested that
the views and suggestions made by consultants should not be ignored. In-depth
investigations on economic, technical and financial analysis are the crucial factors to
be considered so that at the final stage, the viability of a construction development
would give good return on investment and other prospective values to the Client.

ABSTRACT

Fundamental Gravity Theory of Trade (GTT) affirms that the relationship between
distance and volume of trade are inversely proportional to one another. However, a
glance into the Malaysia and United States of America (U.S.) trade relation suggests
that the trade behaviour does not exactly follow the GTT. Although located
approximately 15 328 kilometres apart, the U.S. ranks second after Singapore on
average of trade from the year 2000 to 2014. Hence, the question remains. Is the
GTT being denied by other economic factors in Malaysia-U.S. trade? The present
study analyses Malaysia’s bilateral trade with its 9 largest trading partners from the
year 1992 to 2015 in which the partners must at least mimic the economic indicator
and geographic characteristic of the U.S. such as the GDP, population and trade
openness. By applying time series analysis and Gravity Model of Trade together with
the static panel analysis, this study has come to a conclusion that the trade with U.S.
is able to bend the law of gravity due to the fundamental characteristic of the country
itself. This is supported by a long and strong bilateral tie between Malaysia and the
U.S. which saw a history that traces back to 1957.

ABSTRACT

The compulsory land acquisition is the process by which the government acquires
the private land which needed for any public purpose or for a purpose beneficial to
the economic development of Malaysia. The provisions relating to land acquisition
are stipulated under the Land Acquisition Act 1960 (“the Acquisition Act”). Some 19
years after the last round of amendments to the Acquisition Act, the Land Acquisition
(Amendment) Act 2016 (“the Amendment Act 2016”) had been introduced. The
Natural Resources and Environment Minister has said that changes to the
Acquisition Act are necessary especially for infrastructure development to retain the
country’s competitiveness in heading towards a developed nation. This paper aims
to examine the changes in the Amendment Act 2016 as to summarize the reason for
the amendment. The authors using content analysis to identify the changes involved
in the Amendment Act 2016. The study reports the reason for the amendment is to
explain and improve the implementation procedure in the acquisition of underground
land, strata property and temporary occupation or use of land beside to explain and
improve the procedure concerning the reference to court by the landlord. In addition,
the amendment is to streamline the existing provisions to meets the current
requirement. The findings, therefore, can be referred to all the key players in land
acquisition procedure and as an initiation to assess the effectiveness of the

classroom methods. It is becoming a flexible and effective platform in teaching-
learning environment especially in the higher-level institution. Universiti Teknologi
MARA (UiTM) has launched its Learning Management System (LMS) to facilitate an
online teaching and learning. BL was introduced in 2011 to several courses in UiTM.
Currently, BL is commonly used as the method in teaching and learning in most of
the UiTM courses. However, it is crucial in knowing whether this method is
applicable and significant to students in process of teaching and learning in UiTM
Negeri Sembilan. The purpose of this study is to identify the students’ satisfaction
towards the implementation of BL in UiTM Negeri Sembilan based on five
satisfaction domains which are interaction, instruction, instructor, course
managements and technology. This study covered two campuses in UiTM Negeri
Sembilan which involve four faculties; Faculty of Computer and Mathematical
Sciences (FSKM), Faculty of Sports and Recreation (FSR), Faculty of Applied
Science (FSG) and Faculty of Administrative Science and Policy Studies (FSPPP).

ABSTRACT

The study seeks to examine the factors that affect environmental awareness in
restaurant industries particularly in Malaysia. It will also investigate the
interrelationship of these factors with environmental awareness in Malaysian
restaurant industries. A motivation of this study comes from the prevalent attitude of
unawareness of environmental issues among Malaysian restaurant industries. It has
received little attention and the level of implementation of environmental-friendly
practices is also quite low. A survey is conducted among 150 restaurant managers.
Findings from the preliminary investigation is used to develop questionnaires. There
are three key factors which are suppliers’ awareness, customers’ awareness and
environmental education which contribute towards the environmental awareness.
The results provide support for the hypotheses proposed that all the factors have
significant relationship with environmental awareness in Malaysian restaurant
industries. The key findings also indicate that supplier environmental awareness is
the most influential factor and play a significant role in determining the environmental
awareness in the Malaysian restaurant industries. Future research should increase
the sample size and cover a larger geographical area. It is recommended to
determine other extraneous factors which might affect the environmental awareness
in Malaysian restaurant industries. Environmental management system standards
can be used as a mechanism to manage environmental issues for every business
operation.

ABSTRACT

Public interest in sustainability consumption increases and they may develop a

positive intention to change their healthy consumption, however, behavioral patterns
are not absolute consistent with intention. This is known as intention-behavior gap
from the consumers’ psychology literatures and this study apply these insights in
sustainable food consumption perspective. This study examines the moderating
effect of past experience within the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and how it
influence the relationship between intention and behaviour towards functional food
consumption. Past experience construct was examined in terms of intrinsic (feeling
of using functional food) and extrinsic (functional food environment) past experience
approach. A survey was conducted using the self-administered questionnaire with
the sample of 452 adults. The results showed that only intrinsic past experience
moderates the relationship between intention and behaviour towards functional food
consumption. The results highlight the important of addressing consumers past
experience when making decision towards sustainable food consumption.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to explore the efficiency of tourism sector in different
states and to determine the optimal tourism resources allocation. This can assist
states authority to identify causes of inefficiency either due to lower arrival of tourist
to the states or due to oversupply or duplication of resources. As such precise
information would be significant to gauge the sustainability trend of the sector as well
as to optimize the available resources to further promote tourism in Malaysia. A non-
parametric approach, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is applied to analyze the
efficiency of tourism sector. Due to data unavailability, the study focused on two
main sub-sectors of tourism industry to be considered as inputs which are the
tourism services and accommodation. For tourism services the study used the
number of active licence tour and travel agencies and tourist guides while for the
accommodation, the number of hotel rooms and number of homestay units as inputs.
The output of tourism industry is the total tourist. The data consist of 13 states
namely Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Pulau Pinang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka,
Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sarawak, Sabah and the Federal Territories
(Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan) from 2009 to 2016. Interestingly enough, this
study finds that Perlis, Pahang, Melaka and Federal Territories are the relatively
most efficient state, while Selangor is the least efficient throughout the year from
2009 to 2016. This study also investigates the causes of inefficiency and makes
suggestions for improvements.
