THE DETERMINATION OF THE CYTOTOXIC PROPERTY OF TANNINS FROM UNRIPE BANANA (Musa sa-
pientum) PEELS FAM. MUSACEAE AGAINST THE HUMAN BREAST CANCER CELL LINE MCF-7 USING
THE MTT ASSAY

Abstract

Objectives of the Study

1. To identify the percentage yield of tannins from the acetone and ethanol fractions of unripe banana
peel extract;
2. To characterize the physical and chemical properties of tannins in the acetone and ethanol fractions of
unripe banana peel extract;
3. To identify the concentration at which tannins will exert a cytotoxic effect using the MTT Assay;
4. To compare the cytotoxic property of the tannins from the acetone and ethanol fractions of unripe banana
peel extract to that of the standard drug Doxorubicin.

Methodology

Results and Discussion

Conclusion
The researchers, therefore, conclude that the tannins from the acetone and ethanol fractions of unripe
banana peel extract of unripe banana (Musa sapientum) peels did not have a positive significant difference in
the cytotoxic property compared to the standard doxorubicin on human breast cancer cell line. However, it re-
mains to possess statistical significance.
