season vs. the Cleveland Indians on Thursday, March 29 at Safeco Field…it will be the 3rd time in
club history that Seattle has opened the regular season against Cleveland (also: 4/4/94 at CLE and
3/31/98 vs. CLE)…the Mariners are 0-2 against the Indians on Opening Day…on March 31, 1998
vs. Cleveland at the Kingdome, the Mariners belted 4 home runs off Indians starter Charles Nagy, a
Seattle club record for home runs on Opening Day…Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner
and Russ Davis each went yard in that game.
IN THE SWING OF THINGS…today’s match-up features two of the top-6 clubs in batting average
this spring…the Mariners are batting .297 (60x202) as a club this spring, the 6th-highest average in

MARINERS TO EXPAND PROTECTIVE NETTING AT SAFECO FIELD…in January, the Mariners
announced details of previously reported plans to expand protective netting at Safeco Field…
beginning at the start of the 2018 season, protective netting at the ballpark will extend to the outside
ends of both dugouts and reach a height of 11-feet above field level…the netting will be attached to
the field edge of the dugout roofs…the netting will protect fans seated in Sections 122-138.
