Directions: Historians realize that complex issues are viewed differently by different people in a society. We call these diverse views on such
issues “perspectives.” Perspectives can be different and still correct, and they can sometimes be incorrect or uninformed. When we look at a
viewpoint, we will try to consider what factors lead a person to have the viewpoint. What about them informs their perspective? (See note at the
bottom of the page)
*Note, considering one’s perspective is really about determining their point-of-view, or how the author saw things. Point-of-view and “viewpoint” are not the
same. Viewpoint is really just another word for “opinion.” People’s background characteristics greatly impact how they see events. One’s gender, age, nationality, race,
social status, occupation and the era in which they live greatly impact a person’s perspective.
