Shelter Repairs Update

We are pleased to update that since the last newsletter our shelter repair team have made great progress and have
just completed the 9th pen. It has taken about 7 weeks to complete the work so far. All of the work has been
undertaken by our shelter repair team who are all APA volunteers, many of whom are on holiday and have given up
their time to undertake the work. We would like to say a huge Thank You to the team of John Adams, Trevor Tallack,
Frits van der Meer, Ralf Johnson Adin, Mike Sheppard and Dave McWilliam Grainger (and their very patient wives/
partners!) for all their continued hard work and support. We would also like to thank local builder Equipo A for building
and funding one of the completed pens.

Many thanks also to all our supporters who have donated towards to shelter repair appeal. Without your donations it
could never happen.

We have another 10 pens to complete and we have enough materials and money to build another two pens.
Unfortunately we will be unable to undertake further work until we can raise additional funds or receive further
donations. Each pen costs about 400 Euro to refurbish to a high standard that will ensure the dogs safety and
security and make life easier for volunteers to clean.

We welcome any donations of cash or materials that will help us complete the project.

The life of a fosterer
What is a Dog Fosterer? There are all types! Some are short term only, they will look after a
dog before they fly off to their adopted families for a couple of nights. Then there are the
medical fosterers who will take care of a dog after an operation
or medical treatment. There are long term fosterers who will
take care of a dog for as long as it takes to get them adopted.
And the ones we love most of all, the failed fosterers, the ones
that become so attached to the dog they can’t give them up and
adopt them themselves!
APA has all of these people who help and care for these dogs
and for that we are eternally grateful. So let’s hear it for fosterers, we couldn’t do it with
out you!

Below is a testimony from one of our fosterers. If you feel inspired and would like to foster or learn more about
fostering, please get in touch.

This year, we have fostered two puppies with APA Nerja and we would like to tell everyone about our
experience, in the hope it may encourage others to help out.
We have two dogs of our own but had a little space and some extra love for a puppy in need. Welcoming
them in to our home, making them feel secure and safe, teaching them to play and socialise has been a
mutually rewarding experience; for the puppy, our dogs and us.
We find that very quickly they fit in to our family life; out for long walks, trips to the mountains, paddling in
the sea and lazing on the sofa with a film and a chew toy. We really enjoy showing these dogs what a
loving and stable home is like, it's a privilege to be the foster parents that are preparing them for their next
steps in life.
One of our dogs is a rescue from Cyprus who didn't have the best start in life, but has become a
wonderful best friend to us and a foster brother to the puppies we are caring for. He has given us so much
joy, we wanted to give some back to other pups.
We clean up accidents, we have grown eyes in the back of our heads and we have scrapped the long lay
ins, but it is so worth it to see the progress the puppies make in the time they are with us. Saying goodbye
is bittersweet, there are often tears, but the puppies have both strode off confidently towards their forever
homes without a backward glance, which I like to think of as our little gift to them.

For the Love of Dogs

Thank you to everyone who attended the APA Love & Friendship Party "For the Love of Dogs” at Venta San
Miguel restaurant on 17th February. A fun evening was had by all and we raised 1022€. Special thanks to Lou
Adams for all her hard work in arranging the event and ensuring that all ran smoothly on the night!

Thank you to all the establishments in Nerja and the

surrounding areas who display one of our collection tins
on their premises. Our volunteers spent an afternoon
collecting and counting all the change from the tins and
around 800€ has been donated.
If you would like to have one of our collection tins in
your shop or restaurant, please get it touch.
ADOPTION BOARD

Tessa

Tessa is a 1 year old neutered cross breed who came into the shelter with her four puppies
when they were all dumped at A.P.A. The family were initially moved to a foster home but now
that her puppies are grown up, Tessa lives at our shelter. She is a very nice girl and was a great
mother to her puppies. She is now looking for a home where she can be loved and cared for.

Xena

Xena is a female Mastin Mix. She’s about 9 months old. She is a very calm and friendly
dog. She attends dog training school once a week with one of our volunteers. Xena
would love a home to call her own.

Max
Basset

Max Basset is a 4 year old Mastin who was abandoned and left at a death station. He lives at the shelter
and has also lived in foster homes with many other dogs. He is a good companion, he gets on well with
other dogs and children. He walks well on a lead. He would like to spend his days relaxing in the garden, on
the couch or going on long walks. Max Bassett is ready for his own family and has a lot of love to give.

APA Nerja has many dogs in our shelter and in foster homes that are looking for their forever
home. We have many different types of dogs available for adoption from small to big and from
young to old. Our dogs can be adopted anywhere in Europe. If you’re interested in adopting a
dog, please contact us to find out more.
European Adventures
Our dogs can be adopted anywhere in Europe and we are delighted to tell you that 15 of our dogs travelled to
their forever homes in February: 8 to Sweden, 3 to The Netherlands, 2 to Germany, 1 to Belgium and 1 to the UK.

Thank you to everyone that played their part in rehoming these dogs: those who fostered, those who walked and
cared for the dogs at the shelter, those who found and secured their new homes, those who accompanied them
to the vets and to the airport and those who adopted these wonderful dogs and gave them their forever homes.
Dog rescue could not happen without team work and what a brilliant team we have at APA!

Snowy Sweden

Our dogs that were re-homed in Sweden in February had a bit of a shock when they first landed on Swedish soil
due to the cooler Scandinavian temperatures but also had lots of fun discovering this new, cold, white stuff that all
the humans call snow…..

Rosie’s Puppies
In our last newsletter we told you the story of Rosie and her puppies. Abandoned on the streets of Nerja, Rosie gave
birth to her puppies in a river bed one cold December day last year. Rosie and her puppies were eventually captured
by APA volunteers and taken to safety. Sadly Rosie became ill and subsequently, despite our best efforts, she passed
away.

After their mother’s death, all five of Rosie’s puppies went to live with Sue Kiff, our Shelter Mum. Elsa, Rose, Poppy,
Petal and Woody were enjoying their time at Sue’s playing and terrorising their foster brother Ali. Then suddenly all
the puppies fell ill with a virus called Parvo but luckily their foster mum Sue quickly picked up on the signs and took
them straight to the vets. Fortunately for Petal and Woody, they were the least affected by the virus and with regular
monitoring they could stay at home with Sue. Rose and Poppy were quite ill and had to spend some time at the vets
but eventually got better and were allowed to go home. To ensure the virus was contained, they weren't allowed to go
back to Sue’s and they are currently in separate foster homes with two of our other APA volunteers. Sadly Elsa was
the most affected and was very ill for a while. However Elsa is a strong girl and she finally improved enough to leave
the vets and recuperate at another one of our foster homes.

All five of the puppies have already been reserved: Elsa to Germany, Woody to Sweden and Rose, Poppy and Petal
to the UK. Thank you to Rocio and all at Expedito Vets for their wonderful care and to all our fosterers whose support
has ensured that all of Rosie’s puppies will travel to their new homes in the next few weeks.

Rosie’s puppies have not had the best start in life, but they are fighters and a wonderful legacy to their mother, she
would be proud.

Alex’s Appeal
ALEX’S URGENT SHELTER REPAIRS APPEAL

I AM SO HAPPY - I’m in a new pen: our humans obviously

realised how important I am and moved me to one of the
finished pens! It’s fantastic. So much safer and cleaner for us
dogs, and our volunteers. Thank you everyone for working so
hard to make this happen.

5 pens have been totally re-done; there are 14 that still need
work – it’s a huge job and will take a long time as we rely totally
on donations for materials, and labour from volunteers. Can you
help please?

Oops, nearly forgot! We’re still appealing for blankets and towels
to keep us snug; and newspapers please ‘cos our shelter
mummies are looking after little puppies at their houses!!
