ABSTRACT

Malnutrition and hunger are rampant in developing countries, including the Philippines.
(FAO, 2016). Also, climate change brings challenges that the agriculture sector must respond to.
In part of contributing to resolve the problem, the making of prototypes of sturdy vertical vegetable
gardens partly out of recycled materials was undertaken. Two models were established: model A-
has metal frame and there subsists pakchoi and kangkong plants while model B has a wooden
frame and supports camote. Another set was included, dubbed as conventional elevated pots
method, which is maintained to see plant growth when plants are not grown vertically. After a
month of observation, the results have shown that the units were able to support healthy plant
growth and remain resilient to weather conditions such as typhoons, heavy rainfall, and strong
winds. Individual components such as the support framework were able to withstand the
mentioned weather conditions as well the pot-supports can. Both components were shown to to
able to carry their respective loads. Adding to this, the watering system and the potting mix were
able to support plant growth, which exhibited good growth. Therefore, the models were proven to
be successful prototypes of urban vertical vegetable gardens.
