PRESIDENT’S REPORT

August 1, 2010- August 31, 2010

Dear Fellow Students:

PEACE IN CHRIST!

I give you my third report as President of your Central Student Government. The month of August was a fast
month highlighted by the Midterm exam week and the General Assemblies of some colleges. This is also the month
that actual governance such as policy work and providing multi-faceted services can start to build its momentum
after the event-packed months of June and July.

In Service I remain,

ERNESTO B. NERI
President

Academic Development
1. Ignite Learning Midterm Tutorials – An estimated 600 students participated in the university
wide student led tutorials program. An unprecedented number of subjects were offered which
numbers to more than 46 subjects. The Department is looking forward to improve information
dissemination and incentives for the co-curricular organizations which spearheads the tutorials.

2. Academic Council – the August Agenda are the following:

• Importance of Course Syllabus – the government emphasized the need to give the students
a written course outline at the start of the semester. The right to be given the course outline
is provided by the Magna Carta of Students’ Rights and Welfare.

• QPI Computation in grade slip – A question was raised regarding the automatic 0 QPI
calculation in grades slips. It was clarified that the present system calculated grades of
subjects that are not supposed to be part of the QPI. The upgrading of the system is under
process.

• Clarification of policy on absences of teachers – the government raised concerns regarding

tardiness and absences of teachers. It was agreed that students should report constantly
absent and late teachers to the Deans. The government can also facilitate the channelling of
these reports.

• SBM (on FS & OJT) & Eng’g (on Math 89) curriculum concerns – the government raised
concerns regarding the call for the School of Business and Management to integrate an OJT
in the curriculum. The government also raised concerns about the practical order of subjects
outlined in the Electrical Engineering course. Before they should take ECE 34
(Electromagnetics), they should have knowledge about Vector Analysis (ECE 30).

• MBA program concerns – The government raised concerns regarding the teaching method
and old materials of the MBA program.

Student Services
1. Wellness program – The government with the approval of the Human Resource Office opened
the faculty’s wellness program to the students. This is held every Monday 5:30 pm at the

reached on this matter. The second issue was the beer houses near the campus. The assembly
agreed to make a stand on this matter and consolidate efforts from other sector to engage the

Engaged Citizenship

more than 20 Xavier University students to volunteer for the COMELEC in the registration for
the SK and Barangay elections that lasted for two weeks. Volunteers from different colleges also

Management Program will have its full swing next semester with the full integration of the
segregation bins and the advocacy campaign.

Community and leadership Engagement

1. ONE-CdeO – the government convened the Organisasyon ng Nagkahiusang Estudyante sa
Cagayan de Oro, a coalition of all tertiary student councils in the city. The first assembly elected
its new set of officers and started to path areas for engagement in terms of ideas and practices
exchange and policy engagements. The government presented the ongoing debate on SK
abolition and the K-12 education cycle as areas for possible discernment and engagement. ONE
CdeO can also be a vehicle for local governance engagement.

2. ASEACCU – 3 student representatives include the president and vice-president of the CSG were
sent to Bangkok, Thailand for the 18 th ASEACCU (Association of South East Asian Catholic
Colleges and Universities) Conference on August 25-30. The representatives forwarded to the
convention the Service Learning Program and Values Formation Classes as concrete
manifestations of Catholic Education. The re-echoing effort in campus will now focus on the
expansion and institutionalization of Service Learning Program in the different courses.

“These changes, even how personal or how institutional, are born out from the basic principles of
simplicity, practicality, rootedness, inclusiveness, and engagement.”
