Third Sunday of Lent

The Franciscan disposition toward life is one of gratitude. Here at Arch Street, we are thankful that we have a
beautiful church in the heart of downtown. We are grateful to have an active Franciscan community with both
friars and Secular Franciscans. We have wonderful and sacred holy spaces within this church to be able to
pray, solitarily and communally. This faith community enjoys a wonderful reputation; people in various kinds
of difficulty know that they will find love, encouragement, and forgiveness here on Arch Street. We are
grateful for a large, very dedicated lay staff of about 40 part-time and full-time people.

We are grateful for the financial support of individuals and the business community. We also enjoy much
support and encouragement from various nonprofit and governmental organizations, especially the City of
Boston. We are regularly and ambitiously working on various projects with many of these organizations to
help the physical and spiritual well-being of our local residents and out-of-town visitors. As Franciscans, we
take special care to attend to people on the fringes of either society or the Catholic Church itself. We are
privileged to be able to do this work.

As you journey through Lent, where is your spiritual life with regard to gratitude? Who have been the
important mentors, teachers, leaders, wisdom figures in your life? Who has helped you with your family, your
career, your life of Christian discipleship? Lent would be a terrific time to be grateful to those people, either
through private prayer, or via an outward gesture.

May God continue to bless your Lenten journey.

A "Spiritual Recipe" for the Lenten Journey
Submitted by, Br. John Maganzini, OFM

Each year on Ash Wednesday we begin a journey of 40 days

to the JOY of Easter. The Church gives us the Lenten
season as way of deepening our relationship with God.
Many of us have special devotions and spiritual practices
that accompany our 40 day journey.
We often consider this as a time to "give something up"...
pray more...make sacrifices... All of these and any practices
always become for us the blessings of this holy season.
I would like to share a "spiritual recipe"...

Ingredients: ..a heart that desires a deeper relationship with God

..a commitment to my spiritual journey

Directions: #1 - I "clear the 'clutter' in my life" to make more room for God...
We begin our Lenten journey with a time of reflection. As I
look at my life, what are the situations in my life that might
block my journey... What might these blocks be? I prayerfully name them..
...Is there something that I wish to change?
I make a commitment to clear whatever may block me so I can
make more room for God....

#2 - I "listen to my heart"
Many of us spend a great part of our lives "in our heads"...We
spend much time pondering...
We begin our Lenten journey with a "journey to the heart"..
..we remember Our Lady who pondered as well...
We hear in Scripture....She "pondered all these things" in her heart....
Mary will accompany our journey to the heart...we invite Her...
I make a commitment to "listen and to pray with my heart" for there
God will speak and I will listen...I will hear...

#3 - I make a commitment to LOVE...to love more...

We begin our Lenten journey committed to be more loving...
..through loving moments in prayer for our world, our Country..our Church..
one another..we pray that God's love will touch the hearts of many...
..through good deeds and acts of kindness, we bring to life the
"Great Commandment of Love"....
I make a commitment to be more LOVING that I may always have
a loving heart and that others may "see" in us...God's great love...

#4 - I will be grateful for my spiritual journey

Each evening, before I retire, I reflect on ONE moment of blessing...
ONE moment where I shared or experienced God's great love...
I will experience a heart that is transformed...

...and as I come to the JOY of EASTER what has this spiritual recipe created???
..a grace-filled Lenten season...
..a transformed, listening, loving, open heart...
Lent will be a time of preparation for "new life" in Christ...our Easter message..

Racism: An Ongoing Dilemma A Symposium with Journalists from The Boston Globe Spotlight Team
Tuesday, March 13, 2018 6:15pm until 8:15pm.

A Faith That Does Justice is pleased to welcome journalists from The Boston Globe Spotlight Team as panelists
at its March Community Meeting.

In December 2017, in a 7-part series, the Spotlight Team took on the dilemma of Racism, looking into how much the
City of Boston’s national reputation as a place that’s unwelcoming to blacks is based on current reality.

A Faith That Does Justice is joined by 3 key members of the Spotlight Team: Akilah Johnson, a significant contributor
to the Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing; Lizbeth Kowalczyk, a finalist
for a Pulitzer Prize in 2013 and a finalist for the Scripps Howard award for investigative reporting in 2015 and Patricia
Wen, a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and editor of the Spotlight Team since 2017.
Reverend Dr. Gregory G. Groover, Sr., pastor of the historic Charles Street African Methodist Episcopal Church in
Roxbury, MA, will moderate. Dr. Groover has served on numerous public panels for the City of Boston and has long
had a leadership role in the Greater Boston community.

Please join us at: The Cathedral Church of St. Paul 138 Tremont Street, Boston MA (across from Park Street T station).
We look forward to having you with us for what promises to be an enriching program.

Space is limited. Please register at faith-justice.org/events or by phone 857-990-3670, for admission to the meeting.
