Purpose of Experiment / Equipment: Briefly describe your

Chem-E-Car’s design, intended
mode for operation (source of
power), intended mode for
control (stopping), and major
hazards and their control.

Describe your car’s design:

‘Alfarizi’ consists of 2 components, the bottom part and body of the car. The bottom part
consists of wheels, boards, and dynamo. Besides, the body of the car consists of power

source and stopping mechanism. At power source box (reactor), there is place for dry ice
on the bottom part, at the middle is TEG, then on top of TEG is place for hot reaction from
KMnO4 + glycerin. For stopping mechanism place, we use small box that can be open and
close. This box is placed behind the box of TEGs box. The reaction between KMnO4 +
glycerin causes smoke, so we design the reactor box with open-closed case. It’ll be tightly
closed when the reaction begin. We make a tiny hole in the middle of the case to inject the
glycerin. To make the car move, glycerin will be injected and reacts with KMnO4 to
produce a high temperature in order to TEG streams the electricity to dynamo from the
difference of the temperature.
We use KMnO4 3M (23,7 grams dilute in 50 mL aquadest). It’ll be react with glycerin 50
mL. This reaction produce high temperature because it is an exothermic reaction. The
temperature in which we measure shown in the graphic below.

Based on the graphic, the highest temperature is from the experiment of KMnO4 3M with
glycerin 50 mL. Besides, we use dry ice for the cold. Its temperature is minus 78 Celsius
degree. So, the difference temperature between hot and cold is 199 Celcius degree. The
voltage which we got is 1.3 volt and the electric current is 600 mA.

Furthermore, economical aspects of the car consist of the chemical aspect and components
of the car prices. Here is the list:

Power source:
‘Alfarizi’ uses TEG, based on concept of difference of temperature. A thermoelectric
generator (TEG), also called a Seebeck generator which is a solid state device that converts
heat flux (temperature differences) directly into electrical energy through a phenomenon
called the Seebeck effect (a form of thermoelectric effect). Thermoelectric generator has
function like heat engines, but are less bulky and have no moving parts. However, TEGs
are typically more expensive and less efficient. The heat which we use is from a reaction
between KMnO4 and glycerin.
14KMnO4 (s) + 4C3H8O3 (l) + H2O (l) →14MnO2 + 7K2CO3 (s) + 5CO2(g) + 17H2O(g)

The temperature in which we measure is 121 Celsius degree for KMnO4 3M based on the
graphic below. The amount of KMnO4 is 23,7 grams. It is diluted in 50 ml aquadest. Then,
KMnO4 will be react with 50 mL glycerin. For the cool part, we use up 150 grams of dry
ice. Its temperature is minus 78 Celsius degree. The difference temperature between hot
and cold is 199 Celsius degree. After we measured, the total voltage that can be produced
is 1.3 volt and the electric current is 600 mA.

Here is the graphic about our experiment, therefore we decide to use KMnO4 3M.

Stopping mechanism:
In stopping mechanism, we use the reaction between magnesium and sulfuric acid with the
reaction below;
Mg(s) + H2SO4(aq) → MgSO4(aq) + H2(g)
Mg plate, which has length 7 cm, being dipped to H2SO4 0,5 M liquid. Mg will react with
H2SO4, thus Mg gradually runs out. One of the Mg plateis connected to the dynamo’s cable
and the other connected to TEG’s cable. Therefore, if Mg reacted out with H2SO4 and
gradually runs out, the circuit would be disconnected and the car stopped automatically.
Here is the graphic about our stopping mechanism controlling;

Based on the graphic above, the longest time which has been spend to react Mg plate with
H2SO4 until Mg gradually runs out is surely 68 seconds. So, we decide to use H2SO4 0.5 M
for stopping mechanism.

Hazards inherent in design:

There is no hazard inherent in design of the car. We use safety components in designing
the car. For the body of the car, we use acrylic which is heat resistant. For the front tires,
we use acrylic that coated with rubber so the car can’t be sliding by itself due to slick
acrylic. For the rear tires, we use plastic tires. The reactor box of the car is made by a
plastic lunch box that heat and cold resistant. It is tightly closed so the gas, product of the
reaction, wouldn’t be out. Moreover, we use glass wool as an isolator to make a borderline
between hot and cold temperatures. For the cable, we isolate it with adhesive tape, in order
to no electric sparks occur.
Safety measures:
To protect our body from the hazard of the substances, we use PPE (Personal Protective
Equipment).
Power source which contains potassium permanganate, glycerin, and dry ice has their each
handling. For potassium permanganate which has hazards in skin contact (irritant), eye
contact (irritant), ingestion and inhalation so we have to wear lab-coat, safety glasses, long
pants and sleeves, also mask. For glycerin which has possibility to be combustible at high
temperature, so we need a fire extinguisher in every experiment. Beside that, dry ice has a
temperature under 0 celcius degree, to avoid the effect we have to wear a chemical gloves
to protect the hand.
For the stopping mechanism we use sulfuric acid which is very hazardous in case of skin
contact (corrosive, irritant, permeator), eye contact (irritant, corrosive), ingestion, and
inhalation so we have to wear gloves, full suit, and mask.

Date of issue: 01/01/1997 Revision date: 10/17/2016 Supersedes: 01/12/2015

SECTION 7: Handling and storage

7.1. Precautions for safe handling

Precautions for safe handling : Avoid materials incompatible with cryogenic use; some metals such as carbon steel may

fracture easily at low temperature. Vapor can cause rapid suffocation due to oxygen

deficiency. Never allow any unprotected part of your body to touch solid carbon dioxide or to

touch uninsulated pipes or vessels containing solid or liquid carbon dioxide or cold carbon

dioxide gas. Not only can you suffer frostbite, your skin may stick fast to the cold surfaces.

Use tongs or insulated gloves when handling solid carbon dioxide or objects in contact cold

carbon dioxide in any form. Wear protective clothing and equipment as prescribed in section 8.

For other precautions in using carbon dioxide, see section 16.

7.2. Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Storage conditions : Store and use with adequate ventilation. Do not store in tight containers or confined spaces.

Storage areas should be clean and dry. Solid carbon dioxide is generally delivered to

customers in 50-lb (22.7-kg), ½-cubic ft (0.0142 cubic meter) blocks (approximate dimensions),

wrapped in kraft paper. Small pellets or nuggets are also produced. The product should be

stored in insulated containers that open from the top. Lids should fit loosely so the carbon

dioxide vapor given off as the solid sublimes can escape into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide

gas is about 1½ times as heavy as air and will accumulate in low-lying areas, so ventilation

must be adequate at floor or below grade level.

7.3. Specific end use(s)

None.

SECTION 8: Exposure controls/personal protection

8.2. Exposure controls

Appropriate engineering controls : Oxygen detectors should be used when asphyxiating gases may be released. Ensure exposure

is below occupational exposure limits (where available). Systems under pressure should be

regularly checked for leakages. Provide adequate general and local exhaust ventilation.

Consider work permit system e.g. for maintenance activities.

Hand protection : Cold-insulating gloves.

Eye protection : Wear safety glasses with side shields.

Respiratory protection : When workplace conditions warrant respirator use, follow a respiratory protection program that

meets OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, ANSI Z88.2, or MSHA 30 CFR 72.710 (where applicable).

Use an air-supplied or air-purifying cartridge if the action level is exceeded. Ensure that the

respirator has the appropriate protection factor for the exposure level. If cartridge type

respirators are used, the cartridge must be appropriate for the chemical exposure. For

emergencies or instances with unknown exposure levels, use a self-contained breathing

apparatus (SCBA).

Thermal hazard protection : Wear cold insulating gloves.

Environmental exposure controls : None necessary.

Other information : Wear safety shoes while handling containers.

SECTION 9: Physical and chemical properties

SECTION 5: Firefighting measures

5.1. Extinguishing media

Suitable extinguishing media : Carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder, water spray, fog.

5.2. Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

Fire hazard : EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE GAS. The hydrogen flame is nearly invisible. Hydrogen has a low

ignition energy; escaping hydrogen gas may ignite spontaneously. A fireball forms if the gas

cloud ignites immediately after release. Hydrogen forms explosive mixtures with air and

oxidizing agents.

Explosion hazard : EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE GAS. Forms explosive mixtures with air and oxidizing agents.

Reactivity : No reactivity hazard other than the effects described below.

5.3. Advice for firefighters

Firefighting instructions : If venting or leaking gas catches fire, do not extinguish flames. Flammable vapors may spread

from leak, creating an explosive reignition hazard. Vapors can be ignited by pilot lights, other

flames, smoking, sparks, heaters, electrical equipment, static discharge, or other ignition

sources at locations distant from product handling point. Explosive atmospheres may linger.

Before entering an area, especially a confined area, check the atmosphere with an appropriate

device

Evacuate all personnel from the danger area. Use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)

and protective clothing. Immediately cool containers with water from maximum distance. Stop

flow of gas if safe to do so, while continuing cooling water spray. Remove ignition sources if

safe to do so. Remove containers from area of fire if safe to do so. On-site fire brigades must

comply with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.156 and applicable standards under 29 CFR 1910 Subpart

smoking. Use only non-sparking tools. Use only explosion-proof equipment

Wear leather safety gloves and safety shoes when handling cylinders. Protect cylinders from
physical damage; do not drag, roll, slide or drop. While moving cylinder, always keep in place
removable valve cover. Never attempt to lift a cylinder by its cap; the cap is intended solely to
protect the valve. When moving cylinders, even for short distances, use a cart (trolley, hand
truck, etc.) designed to transport cylinders. Never insert an object (e.g, wrench, screwdriver,
pry bar) into cap openings; doing so may damage the valve and cause a leak. Use an
adjustable strap wrench to remove over-tight or rusted caps. Slowly open the valve. If the valve
is hard to open, discontinue use and contact your supplier. Close the container valve after
each use; keep closed even when empty. Never apply flame or localized heat directly to any
part of the container. High temperatures may damage the container and could cause the
pressure relief device to fail prematurely, venting the container contents. For other precautions
in using this product, see section 16.
