 Worksheet/pencil
 Egg shakers and hand drums

PROCEDURE

 Introduce poem “Pease Porridge Hot”


 Students perform the steady beat differently for each playing
of the song (add drums to keep the steady beat)
 Students review poem “The beat stays the same, the beat
stays the same. But the rhythm, changes with the words.”
 Students speak the words while clapping the rhythm (add egg
shakers to play the rhythm)
 Review quarter note, eighth notes, and quarter rest (drawing
on white boards)
 Distribute Pease Porridge Worksheet, students draw rhythms
into the bowls to match the rhythm (syllables) of the words
