What Do We Do?
• Design, develop and market “no new wires ” PLC (Powerline Communications) robust,
reliable and low cost modem chips.
• Develop innovative modulation techniques to enable PLC modem implementations.
• Offers a Physical Layer (PHY), MAC (Media Access Control) Layer, Networking Layer on
SoC (System on a Chip) devices and firmware.
• Yitran solutions are ideally suited for Command and Control applications including ‘Smart
Grid’ (Energy Management and Conservation, AMM/AMR/AMI), Home/Building
Automation and Commercial Automation and Management.

About PLC
n PLC is a “No New Wires” technology, which uses the standard
existing electrical wiring as the physical medium for communication.
n The electrical wiring medium was originally devised for transmission of

power at 50-60 Hz !!
n Signal attenuation at frequencies that can be utilized for PLC is fairly

high.
n Electrical appliances introduce a variety of noise signals and

interferences such as carrier wave signals, spikes, pulses, bursts and
more.
n Conclusion – Reliable and robust modem, yet low cost, is a MUST to

enable ubiquitous networking and control using
PLC.

Yitran Achievements up to date:
n HomePlug® Alliance chose IT800 transceiver technology as the base

technology for HomePlug Command and Control standard
n Endesa – the largest power utility in Spain, chose Yitran technology for its
11 million power meters in Spain and for another 11 million in South America.
Deployment starts in 2008.
n LG Electronic – Have combined Yitran components in 10 of their white goods

appliances and promoted Yitran as their standard in Korea through the LNCP
forum.
n Echonet, a major standard forum in Japan has chosen Yitran as Standard C.
n Renesas – One of the biggest semiconductor company in the world has licensed
Yitran technology to be combined with its M16 MCU chips.
n Haier – The largest appliance company in China is promoting Yitran technology

as a standard in China for Home Networking.

Why Should Power Utilities Use PLC ?

n Power Utilities are privatized and de-regulated.
n Competition for power, creates the need for lowering cost and increase of
revenue.
n The increase in public demand for energy creates the need for Energy Saving
and Energy Management procedures.
n Utilities can lower cost by reading meters remotely, charging according to time
of use or according to level of power used, automating power failure recovery
and lowering the investments in new power stations. In some areas of the world,
30% and more of the electricity is stolen. AMR is used to detect electricity
looting.
n Utilities can increase revenue by offering more services to the customers
(besides just offering power).
n The above points create a need for communication, i.e. creating a “Smart Grid”
to enable the utility to reach every point on the grid remotely.
n Powerline Communications is the most convenient and cost effective means of
communications for Power Utilities, which owns the power grid.

Examples of PLC AMR Projects:

n The worldwide potential market for Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) is about 1B
meters. Almost EVERY power utility in the world is under pilots or trials to use AMR.
The estimate is that most will use PLC. Some will use wireless.
n Italy power utility ENEL installed 27M PLC AMR meters (ended in 2005).
n Sweden Utilities start replacing meters under law (first project launched in 2006). The
first 700K meters are installed by the Vattenfall utility.
n Dutch Utility (Nuon) is under final tender before installing several million AMR meters.
In 6 years ALL meters will have to be replaced in the Netherlands.
n Spain Utility ENDESA is under final preparations before starting its AMR deployment
in 2007-2008.
n ENDESA, which owns utilities in South America, will deploy AMR there starting in
2008.
n TXU Electric, one of the largest electric utilities in the US is deploying PLC for smart
greed purposes. They are working with Current Communications Inc.
n Several hundred thousand AMR meters are installed in China. In the coming years this
will increase to mass deployment.
n Similar projects are taking place in India and other countries.

• HomePlug – In February 2006, Yitran’s IT800 transceiver was
selected as the baseline technology for the HomePlug
Command Control standard.
• Microsoft created a unified standard for Home Control

Networking called SCP (Simple Control Protocol). IT800 was
chosen as the ONLY PLC platform for SCP. YITRAN and
Renesas sell the IT800/SCP SoC ASIC.
• GE (General Electric) together with Microsoft announced that

they would integrate IT800/SCP into their lighting/switching and
white good products.
