ANNOUNCEMENT for ASEAN S&T Awards

The 10th ASEAN STI week will be celebrated in conjunction with the 17th
ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science and Technology, related Meetings,
ASEAN STI Exhibition and the ASEAN STI Conference in the period of
October 12th-20th, 2017, Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.

ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology (COST) aims to strengthen the


ASEAN science and technical capacity through giving recognition to scientists
and technologists with the triennial ASEAN Science and Technology Awards
(“S&T Awards”): ASEAN Young Scientist and Technologist Award (AYSTA),
ASEAN Outstanding Scientist and Technologist Award (AOSTA), and ASEAN
Meritorious Service Award (AMSA). ASEAN S&T Awards Ceremony will be
held on 19th October 2017 during the 10th ASEAN STI week.

The S&T Awards will provide the 1 winner of AYSTA with a USD 10,000 cash
prize, 1 winner of AOSTA with a USD 10,000 cash prize, and 10 awardees of
AMSA with each a medal. The 2 winners and 10 awardees will also be provided
with separate provision of travel, accommodation and per diem to attend the
award ceremony at the 10th ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation
Week. The age limit for the AYSTA is under 35 years of age as on 31 August
2017.

The theme for AYSTA and AOSTA is disruptive technologies, referring to both
the component technologies and its applications. Examples of disruptive
technologies include block-chain, mobile internet, automation of knowledge
work, internet of things, cloud, advanced robotics, autonomous or near-
autonomous vehicles, next-generation genomics, energy storage, additive
manufacturing (3D printing), and advanced materials.
Guideline for ASEAN ST Awards (AYSTA, AOSTA, AMSA)

A. OBJECTIVE OF ASEAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AWARDS

 To give recognition to the achievements and contribution rendered by scientists and


technologies in the region;
 To provide scientists and technologists with incentives to reach for further success;
 To encourage scientists and technologists to publish and patent their work;
 To provide younger scientists with inspiration to reach their fullest potentials; and
 To show the general public especially the youth concrete examples of successful
careers in science.

B. SELECTION CRITERIA

a. The ASEAN Young Scientist and Technologist Award (AYSTA)

 This award is given to one ASEAN scientists or technologist who has either shown
considerable promise in, or made substantial contribution to research, development
and innovation in scientific field.
 It is hoped that this award will help inspire the awardees to reach their fullest potential
in their pursuit of scientific and technological excellence.
 The panel will select the winner from 10 finalists, one from each ASEAN Member
States.
 The requirements of the nominees should be under 35 years of age as on 31 August
2017.

b. The ASEAN Outstanding Scientist and Technologist Award (AOSTA)

 This award is given to one ASEAN scientist or technologist for his/her outstanding
contributions in the scientific and technological field through sustained and inspired
efforts, which have received national and international recognition.
 Scientist or technologist is preferably working in his/her field with at least 5 (five)
years of active contribution to the progress of science and technology.
 The panel will select the winner from 10 finalists, one from each ASEAN Member
States.

c. The ASEAN Meritorious Service Award (AMSA)

 These awards are given to 10 scientists and technologists, one from each of ASEAN
Member States, for their meritorious service science and technology in the region.
C. THEME FOR AYSTA AND AOSTA
