with the frame of a skeleton where the beams are horizontal and the columns vertical. The
main significance of this architecture is the fact that it made the construction of skyscrapers
possible. Other importance includes the fact that it enhances durability, allows versatility and
also saves the cost of construction because less time is needed for construction and the fact
Discuss and explain the differences between proportion and scale in art.
One important aspect of art is the relationship that exists between an object and the
body of a human being. Scale in artwork, on one hand, compares the size of the object
relative to the size of an individual’s body. This focuses on the size of the whole object and
not the different parts of the object. The proportion, on the other hand, looks at relative sizes
Discuss how art can function as "cultural documents." Reference a specific culture and
works of art.
People are able to express their culture and worldview through their art. Since an
individual’s worldview and thought is greatly influenced by their culture artists are able to
bring out many aspects of culture through their artwork. Such art serves as cultural
documents by giving insight into the different cultures (Lazzari & Schlesier, 2016). For the
hip-hop rap music for example “live your life” by T-Pain ft. Rihanna shows the gangster
James Hampton made such a great contribution through his work of art by building a
piece of art that became very significant to religion that is the "The Throne of the Third
Heaven of the Nations Millennium General Assembly" which was a display of various
themes both in the old and the New Testament. This could have been influenced by the fact
that he is known as the son of a Bishop. Despite being a janitor, it was undeniable that his
religious piece of art was a masterpiece and rightfully so since he spent more than one decade
(14 years) working on this piece of art (Lazzari & Schlesier, 2016).
The fact that he was not trained is an irrelevant fact since he used his natural talent
and creativity to come up with a beautiful and significant piece of work just from materials
that had been scavenged which he found in a garage he had rented. The fact that he was able
to develop such a relevant piece of work is the real artistry that James has since it is a display
of his creativity despite not having been trained though it is not known whether or not he
James Hampton worked on this piece of work for more than a decade in secret not
revealing his work to his family, friends or his employer in a garage that he had rented after
working as a janitor during the day. His work was such a secret that it was only discovered
after his death by two individuals in the garage and the donated it to Smithsonian Institution’s
National Museum. The sister to James came to know about the piece of work when claiming
his body before his story became popular in 1964 after his death. James received no
recognition for the same reason that he had kept his work secret until his death which is sad
since he deserved it, but his secret work gained so much popular about a month after his
death.
