Spot the Hazards Activity Tutor Notes

Resources needed: Method:

Tutor Notes, pages 3 - 5. 1. Dependent on time, hand out one,

two or all three of the Worksheets,
Photocopies of Worksheets, pages 6 - 8. pages 6 - 8, and ask the class to study the
picture(s) of a hair salon, a garage and /
or an office.

2. Ask the class to define a hazard.

One definition could be ‘a possible
danger’.

3. Explain that there are a number of

potential health and safety hazards
depicted in the picture(s) (hair salon -
11, office - 10, garage - 13 ) which could
result in serious accidents.

4. Ask students to circle the hazards

on the picture(s) and make a note, using
the back of the sheet, of why they feel
they are hazards.

5. Finally, get volunteers to feed back

the hazards they have identified. See Tutor
Notes, pages 3 - 5.

1 Top left off bottle allowing contents to drip onto electric socket.

2 & 3 Dirty hairbrush. Scissors left open.

4 & 5 Electric kettle left too near edge of work surface. Kettle should be in kitchen
area not on salon work surface.

6 Dirty towels should be replaced.

7 & 8 Electric wires trailing over floor. Kettle wire is frayed.

9 Overflowing rubbish bin - needs emptying.

10 Floor needs sweeping - dangerous, could be slippy.

11 Puddles of water on floor - dangerous, could be slippy.

3 Mechanic underneath car not wearing goggles.
4 Car raised up on bricks instead of jack.
5 Mechanic wearing sandals.
6 Tyre left in middle of floor.
7 & 8 Wire of electric drill is frayed and electric socket should not be so near to sink.
9 Electric and other tools left on sink by dripping tap.
10 & 11 Top left of can of oil and oil spill making floor slippy.
12 & 13 Welder not wearing protective goggles or gloves.

1 Frayed flex on electric fire - should be discarded and it is also a trip hazard.
2 Trailing wires from desk - trip hazard.
3 The box is too heavy to carry - over 15 kg - use 2 people and a trolley.
4 Too many drawers open at one time in the filing cabinet - open one at a time.
5 Bottom drawer left open in filing cabinet - this is a trip hazard.
6 Carrying too many files - should be able to see over whatever is being carried.
7 Turned up mat is a trip hazard, as are holes in any floor covering.
8 Files stored on top of tall filing cabinet - they could fall on someone.
9 Fire exit blocked by boxes.
10 Open fire needs a fire guard for safety. Out of date electrical equipment
should be discarded.
