Biodiversity, also known as biological diversity, is basically the measure of the
variety of life in the world or in a particular habit or ecosystem. All of the flora and fauna
present here in the world contributes a little something to maintain the balance that is
needed for their collective survival. These species help in fulfilling the basic survival needs
of each other. It is thus important to have a rich biodiversity.

Over the years, the importance of maintaining a rich biodiversity has been stressed
upon time and again, the level of biodiversity has seen a generally downward trend and
it is likely to go down further in the years to come. Scientists estimate that between 0.01%
to 0.1% of all species become extinct each year. The main reason for this is a substantial
increase in pollution of all kinds which is brought upon by the massive technological
advances that has helped us tremendously. A lot of plants and animals have become
extinct in the recent years due to the environmental changes brought about by man and
many are estimated to go extinct in the coming time. This would lead to further decline in
biodiversity which in turn would lead to imbalance in the environment and cause a threat
to the human race as well as other organisms living on Earth.

It is essential to grow more sensitive towards environmental concerns, especially

those that are considered to be very real threats. Governments of various countries
should take part in spreading informational awareness in these issues using all means
necessary. Even common folk should do their part in maintaining environmental balance.

We, human beings, have incorporated technology in societies so deeply that we

seem to have overlooked taking care of the environment. Just like a mother, our world is
generous and compassionate towards its inhabitaonts. As a student environmental
advocate, what I want everyone to understand is that if we want such magnanimity to last
for another thousand generations, we should do our part and bring collective change to
the world.
