Revit Notes
Revit is a BIM tool, developed by Autodesk; with bidirectional associativity and parametric
behavior. Revit is used for spacial design, modelling, visualization and documentation.
Types of files in Revit

-Revit project file (.rvt) (Project file is a collection of family files)

-Revit family file (.rfa)

-project template file (.rte)

-family template file (.rft)

Starting new project file

-create new project with suitable template

-Type UN to set units for length, area, volume etc.

-setting up levels

-level is a horizontal working plane at desired height

-Go to project browser-open anyone of elevation-adjust level height (by clicking the height)

Creating new Level

-Architecture tab-datum-level (LL)

Either we can draw a new level or we can use the pick line with an offset value in option bar

TYPES OF ELEMENTS IN Revit

-model elements: these elements are visible in all views (e.g.: wall, doors, furniture etc..,)

-detail elements: These will be visible only in the view in which it is created (eg: annotations-
dimension,tag,text)

-datum elements: levels and grids (not visible in 3D view)

TYPE OF PARAMETERS

-Instant parameter: properties will be changed for selected instances or elements (eg: like sill and head
height of door, column height)

This parameter appeared in the properties palette

-Type parameter: properties will be changed for all instances belonging to the same type (eg: like width,
height of doors and windows, column’s cross sectional dimensions & wall thickness)

This parameter appeared in the properties palette but click the {edit type} to edit

CREATING A NEW TYPE OF ELEMENT

-creating new type of element (example like wall or window) with different dimension

-Choose similar type from type selector of properties palette -click on ‘edit type’ - duplicate it-edit name
and type parameters as per requirement

Eg:-CREATING A NEW WALL TYPE

-go to wall tool-select similar type selector

-Edit type-duplicate it -structure edit-add component by insert-use up & down to adjust layer-o.k.

PROJECT FILE

-It is a collection of family files

Family file

-it is a collection of components

TYPES OF FAMILY FILES

-system family: which is not loadable from other source (eg: wall, floor, roof, stair, etc..,)

-component family: which are loadable from the already created component file or templates (eg: door,
windows, chair, etc..,)

CREATING FLOOR

-click on floor tool

-type of floor select from the type selector

-a closed sketch to indicate boundary of floor

-position of floor (eg: ref plane or level)

-floor will be extruded downwards direction

TO CREATE opening in wall

-select wall, go to edit profile

Edit the sketch-finish

CREATING roof

-roof by foot print

-roof by extrusion

-Open ceiling plan - roof by footprint-choose define slope specify the overhang value

-create sketch and finish-select and use edit footprint to make changes

ROOF by extrusion

-Open 3d view roof by extrusion - pick a plane- ok - select new working plane - create extrusion

Profile to attach wall and attach roof

JOINING roof

-open 3d view modify geometry join or unjoin roof

-select the edge to joint then select face of other roof

CREATING railing

-Open floor -create railing path as a sketch-select type of rail specify height of placement finish

-go to edit type and edit rail structure and baluster placement to create new types

CREATING ramp

-inputs needed

- (starting ht

- ending ht

- width of ramp) - instances parameter

- Thickness, slope, material AND shape - TYPE PARAMETER

GREEN - BOUNDRY

BLUE - RUN OR DIRECTION

BLACK - SLOPE CREATE SKETCH AND FINISH

While creating ramp use arc for ramp of Arc shape

PLACING DOOR IN CURTAIN WALL

-load curtain door

-open 3d view; using tab select the panel and unpin it

-select door from type selector (properties palette)

CREATING A NEW FAMILY FILE FOR PROFILE

-Go to new - family - select template profile- open

-create a closed sketch in positive quadrant

-Save the family file in existing profile folder - load in the project and use while creating sweep.

TO HIDE ELEMENTS

1. Select it - go to temporary hide element

TO UNHIDE

2. go to view control bar Click on ‘reveal hidden elements’ (bulb) hidden element visible in red color -
select it - right click - unhide

CREATING CEILING

- Open ceiling plan of respective level

-go to properties palette-select type-adjust height- use automatic or sketch ceiling-to edit ceiling the use
the tap then edit boundary

CREATING IMAGE USING CAMERA

- View -create 3d view

-specify camera height and click for camera position

-specify target height and click for target position

CREATING PHOTO REALISTIC IMAGE BY Rendering (RR)

- open 3d view created with camera

- go to view graphic render (rr)

-set render quality

-choose lighting scheme and sun setting

-select background style then render

After rendering adjust exposure of image for better results and save render in project or export as image
file

APPLY PAINT

-open 3d view-modify-geometry-paint

-Select paint-click on face - done

Same as remove paint but chose remove paint option

To paint partially :- Modify-geometry-split faces

CREATING NEW MATERIAL

-Go to manage -settings -materials

-Select a similar materials-right click-duplicate- (see down) and open asset browser double click required
ASSET.
