Description of the artifact and how it meets the standard and criteria:

This artifact is a project description for an activity that my co-teaching partner and I
used in our 7th grade reading classes. For the second collection of stories in our district
curriculum, the texts focused on perception vs. reality. In this activity, students needed
to use their knowledge of what perception and reality are to discuss how others
perceive them compared to who they really are. Students had to draw four symbols or
pictures of how others perceive them in the eye marked “perception” and four symbols
of who they truly are in the eye labeled “reality.” Students then wrote a paragraph
explaining what they drew and why. This artifact allows students to use visual
representation along with writing. Giving students multiple formats to express their
knowledge helps increase their engagement in the content.

Reflection on the artifact:

This project allowed my co-teaching partner and I to assess our students’ understanding
of perception and reality in a unique way. This project was very effective in our class.
Students were able to apply their understanding of the terms and show how it related to
their own life. I learned a lot about my students. Some students shared very personal
aspects of their reality, including feeling sad or lonely. Our class showed that they
understood the differences between perception and reality. Using this instructional
strategy and allowing the students to show their knowledge through drawing increased
the level of engagement that I saw in class.
