Agenda:
Brief discussion of service ideas.

Minutes:
 Opened the meeting with introductions because there were
several new attendees. Including Advisors and Officers, twelve
members attended.
 Everyone signed in.
 Discussed Honors for Action program. This being my first meeting
I asked for a brief explanation of what Honors in Action program
was. Phi Theta Kappa President Dillion explained that Honors in
Action is a program that enables a Phi Theta Kappa chapter to
complete an annual service project that increases their chapters
star ranking from a preliminary 1 star up to a 5-star rank. Last
years’ service project was War and Peace.
 Discussed Service upcoming service project. Club had decided
last meeting that they would host a study event at the library. Club
decided to table the setting of a date until next meeting but was
discussed that it should be close to finals.

 Discussed planning of induction ceremony for new members. The
induction ceremony is typically held in April or May. Members
briefly discussed what needed to be done to prepare for the event.
Advisor Trisha explained there was a check list, and everything
was provided, just needed members to setup and prepare the
room. Decided to table the planning and date setting for a later
meeting.
 Service projects were discussed.
 Suggestions of recycling stations on campus for glass recycling.
There is the issue of members being responsible for emptying the
glass recycle and the need to have the means to transport the
glass to the transit center for recycling.
 Another idea was litter pickup events in the community.
 Phi Theta Kappa has partnered with the literacy council in the past
to hand out free books at the Kid Fest that happens in May. That
was suggestion of a service project the club could do again.
 Suggestion to have work shops for scholarships. Phi Theta Kappa
has given out scholarships in the past but do not have the funds to
give out many.
 Was suggested that Phi Theta Kappa do a fund raiser to help raise
the much-needed funds for the barriers for the 8th street bridges in
Port Angeles. Advisor Trisha explained that any money raised by
Phi Theta Kappa was regulated by the state on how it could be
disbursed. For example, money can be disbursed in the form of
scholarships or to pay for members to attend conferences.
 Topic was led to conferences and what they were for. From which
plans were being made to do a fundraiser so members could
attend an upcoming conference in Aberdeen on March 24th. The
pre-registration cost is $55 if registered by March 3rd, after which
the cost would be $85.
 Bounced some ideas regarding fundraisers and was reminded that
anything gambling related was not allowed.
 Suggestion of a movie night in the pub. People could come with
blankets and pillows and hunker down to watch a movie. We could
sell snacks such as popcorn, nachos and candy. As well sell water
and other beverages. Was discussed the need of food handlers
license to serve non-packaged food. 3 members have their food
handles license.
 We will be looking into having food donated if possible, the club
does not currently have a large budget for fundraising events.

 Was also suggested that a guess the number of jellybeans jar was
at this event. Guesses were by donation and winner got the jar of
jellybeans.
 Advisor Samantha Hines will be looking into movie options that will
be appropriate. Club President Dillion will be contacting Rick Ross
regarding using the building, big screen tv and facilities for Movie
night.
 Club decided to aim for February 16th for Movie night.
 Meeting ended.

Conclusion
I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa, but I have not attended a meeting until
today. I am happy I attended, and I now wish I had made the time sooner to
be involved. It was great to be a part of a group that is looking to make a

change or difference. Working as a team and collaborating on ideas service
projects and fundraisers. As with most things, I wasn’t just a spectator at
this meeting. I dove right in and became an active Phi Theta Kappa
member. before the meeting started I had jokingly, stated I am may fall in
love and want to continue coming back. Well it happened, and I will be an
active member of Phi Theta Kappa from now on.
