TSLB3143 FUNDAMENTALS OF RESEARCH IN EDUCATION

PROPOSAL TEMPLATE

WORKING TITLE:
ENHANCING READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH GRAPHIC ORGANIZER
NAME: NUR ARDINI IZZATI BINTI ABD AZIZ
1. BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE STUDY
Graphic organizers are excellent for teaching students about relationships in a text. They help break
down the whole text into manageable pieces. They also show the relationship of those pieces to
each other.

2. PROBLEM STATEMENT
i. Current issue/Symptom –with citations
Reading skill – not able to understand text especially if it is quite wordy
 Osborne (2010) sees students’ major reading problem arising when they are so worried
about understanding every single word of a text they are reading that they do not get the
general idea from the passage.
Lose interest in reading and understanding the text

ii. Specific problem(s) underpinning the issue – with citations

iii. Proposes solution

Using graphic organizer

3. OBJECTIVES

4. THEORETICAL / CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

5. SIGNIFICANCE
 Develop understanding of a reading text

6. RESEARCH QUESTIONS 7. INSTRUMENTATION 8. DATA ANALYSIS
i. How do the pupils respond to
the use of graphic organizers in
the reading classroom?
ii. What is the impact of graphic
organizer on pupils’ reading
performances?
9. RESEARCH DESIGN 10. SAMPLING TECHNIQUES/SAMPLING FRAME
Quasi-Experimental

11. CONTRIBUTION TO THE BODY OF KNOWLEDGE (THEORY, METHODOLOGY, PRACTICALITY)

According to Zahra (2012), There are different types of graphic organizers such as fishbone diagram,
cause and effect, pie chart, semantic feature analysis, cloud, continuum scale, comparison and
contrast matrix, and the list goes on. For instance, a star diagram is a basic way for brainstorming
about a topic or simply listing all the major traits related to a theme. It can also be served as a story
star, a star diagram that used to describe the key points of a story, noting the five W’s: who, when,
where, what, and why.
